Default Healthy, Portable Snacks

Hey, ya'll!!!

I know there have been posts on what you like to eat before, but I'd really like some more ideas for snacks that are health AND portable. Stuff that can be in my purse all day. And preferably something that doesn't look like "diet food." I mean... we're in our 20s and on the go a lot and one of my problems is stopping for junk on the run. Plus if I do have a snack with me, I don't want it to be wierd looking "diet food" that all the people around me judge me about. Ok. That is all. Any suggestions are greatly appreciated.

Oh, and for me snacks are <200 calories, so something around that amount would be great.

-roasted almonds (count out a serving in a ziploc - i think 100 calories is about 20 almonds?!?)
-fiber one bars - 130 calories and SO good! the oats and chocolate one seriously tastes like a chocolate bar, and the peanut butter one is yummy too
-those mini rice cake things - replace chips! my faves are salt and vinegar, cheddar, sea salt and lime

can't wait to hear everyone else's suggestions!

Okay, I make it myself, but lately I've been really into beef jerky. It's completely portable and high in protein. You also can't eat it really fast! I'm not sure if commercially available jerky is quite as good for you, but the higher protein levels should stave off hunger. The other thing I do is make a cake with protein powder in it (chocolate), but it doesn't travel all that well. However, I've fed it to people and they just think it's cake.

(if you're interested in the cake)

what about home air popped popcorn? You can add no or as little butter etc as you want. I prefer to add none because its healthier, and the popcorn tends to go soggy with the butter if you want to keep it in your bag for a while

Wheat thin crackers are good, fruits like an apple or orange, fiber one bars are GOOD (but they can make you gassy), string cheese or other cheeses

You could also carry around bags of cereal or something. Or get one of these nifty things: Cereal-On-The-Go. I don't know if the milk would make you appear too noticeable, but I think those things are so cool. lol

I carry around a granola bar. Usually they are filling enough to sustain me for a while.

Real Cdn- Thanks so much for the recipe!!! I was wathing the premiere of "Cook Yourself Thin" at the Gym and they were making cupcakes with zucchini!!! I was wondering if it were actually good! Oh, and how do you make jerky? Do you have to have one of those fancy food dehydrators?

MaryEllen: That is sooooo cool!!!! I LOVE cereal and that is soooooo cool!!! There is a container store here and I have to have one!!! Have to have one!!!

Thanks everyone!!! You're giving me great ideas!!! Keep em coming!!!

Zucchini is a great addition to baked goods. It keeps them moist, without adding a lot of calories.

I do have a dehydrator (used mainly for fruit when we had a lot of fruit trees in an old house). I used a variety of recipes off the internet (some sweet, some hot, etc) but I'm sure I saw instructions on how to make jerky in an oven. I didn't bookmark any of the recipes, but here's a basic 'how to' and I checked, it does tell you how to use an oven.

I like to take a cup of frozen grapes (about 100 calories) when I leave in the morning. I just have to eat them right away (or else they get mushy)

A piece of fruit
baggie of cereal
Trail Mix
crackers and PB
half a sandwich
