  • Hi everyone!

So this past week I fell off the wagon a bit and didn't exercise... at all. Well besides the walking around school (big whoop!)

I used to run in the morning everyday but now I already have to wake up early to get ready for school and catch the bus that I don't want to wake up any earlier. (wah wah, right? ) When I get home it seems like I'm studying/doing homework until it's time for bed and then I do it over again the next day. The weekend I'm usually doing homework or trying to cram in a little social time! Plus I want to try find a part time job too. Can't the day have 30 hours?

Today I squeezed in a run. I'm going to try get back on track!

How does everyone else balance working out with school and social time?

Also, do you prioritize your health above school, school, above health, or equally?
  • To me if you are committed to something you will find the time. That might mean you need to get up 20 minutes earlier, watch 20 minutes less of tv, study a little less. You can't seriously be studying from 5pm (just a guess at what time you get home) until 10 or 11pm. If you are studying that long you need to seriously take a break. Excercise is good for the brain and it may actually make your studying more effective taking the break and exercising.

    Good luck
  • I leave at 6:20 in the morning and am home by 5. I have dinner and do hw/relax for an hour while the food settles, then I go jogging. That's done by max. 8:00, so there's some flex time in there. 8-10 I do homework. 10-11, general housework and lunch packing. Sleep 11-5:30ish.
  • I get up 30 minutes earlier and go running 3 days during the week before class and usually either Saturday or Sunday I will actually set my alarm (as opposed to sleeping in) to get up and go running/walking for a good long hour before starting my weekend activities. If I try to wait and do it in the evening I usually get sidetracked with homework, reading, and other things and don't make time for it.

I'm agreeing with benchmarkman in wondering if you are seriously studying 5-6 hours every night? Take a break! You deserve a little time to think about something other than school!
  • I'm gradually trying to get back into the habit of waking up in the morning to exercise. I let myself slack this summer b/c I had nothing to do after work, but now my life is getting crazy and before work is the ONLY time I have to exercise.

I just think - okay, I've lost almost 30 lbs, I want to lose 30 more, and its not going to get done if I just stop exercising - I actually have to mentally berate myslf to get up some mornings, but it does work.

I also recommend getting PLENTY PLENTY PLENTY of sleep. That's going to help you with school AND your health.

Also, on the days you don't get up, why don't you just go for walks around campus? That's what I've been doing, but Towson has like 900,000 stairs, so that helps too.
  • Its very hard especially if your a mother like myself. I work part time and attend school full time. Between the hours of 9-5 I alternate between work and school. I was working out five days a week before school started but today I realized that isnt going to work so I have told myself that I would work out three days each week but work out for about two hours a session. I think that could work for me ill see how it goes. losing weight is the most important thing to me right now so when I think of all the different obstables that I am dealing with I kind of get depressed but I think at the end of the day as long as I stick to my program next year ill be where I want to be on my journey. Some of my weight loss goals may just take longer. Good luck
  • Aw man do I feel you on this one. My ideal exercise time is early morning or late evening, because I refuse to get a tan and my exercise is walking outside (and I live in Hawaii!). Well, early morning is out.. my roommate has this thing where she can't be asleep while I'm awake, and she hates being awake while I'm asleep, so she basically wants the same sleep schedule as me. So I have class at 7:30AM, and typically get up at 6:00AM to get ready, and I'd have to get up at like 5:00AM to exercise, but that would be disrespectful to my roommate, because then SHE'D have to be up at 5:00AM every morning. @_@ So hard. Plus I often have class until it gets dark out, not leaving time to exercise. Wednesday I start class at 7:30AM and don't get back till 9:00PM (I have to do a lot of homework ahead of time since I don't have any time to do it on Wednesdays) and although I only have 7 hours of class, in that 14 hour timespan I also have like 5 hours of work, so I actually have very little time to myself all day. I can't just exercise between any break because the sun is just too strong. >_< I'm not making excuses, I'm just trying to figure out what to do as well. It's so confusing.
(For now I am at least always taking the stairs.. every little bit counts! [I live on the 5th floor in my dorm and I like never see ANYONE on the stairs XD I think everyone else just always takes the elevator]).
  • haha I do study mad hours because I've been out of school for a while and want to try get good grades and a scholarship so I can afford to continue going to school. I'm hoping once I get back into the groove of studying I'll be pro and it won't take me as long.

To run in the morning before school I would have to wake up at 5:00am too, Megwini! I'm pretty sure humans aren't meant to get up that early At least not this one! Or else I'd have to sleep at 9pm and I just can't do that.

I think I will just try run on my days that I don't have school. The stairs are a good idea Stellarose, my campus is at the top of a ridiculously steep hill and then once you get to the top you get to walk up minimum 4-8 flights depending what floor you're on. Everyone says you get an education and a good butt there haha.

Really I probably just need to push myself more to do it and maybe get used to running after school.

    Thanks for the advice all
  • kimminy - is there a gym on campus? maybe there is time in between classes... if not, than maybe running on the school's track?
  • Megwini, I'd just politely apologize to your roommate and get up in the morning to go walking. Your roomie is an adult and she'll get used to it. You shouldn't be constrained by her schedule, because that is disrespectful to YOU!
  • I don't go to school as a student, but I am a volunteer three days a week at my children's school.

YES! Absolutely my health is absolutely, unequivically number one priority. I must put my physical NEEDS first before I can get anything accomplished for myself or others!

I run first thing in the morning most of the time. If I have to be at the school by 7, then I get up at 5 to run. Whatever it takes IS what I am going to do.
  • HEALTH = #1 PRIORITY. The end. (For me)

Seriously, if I get a lower grade on a test because I went for a run instead of studying, it is totally worth it to me. If you had told me that I was saying things like this 4-5 years ago, I would have told you that you were nuts but now I understand that everyone deserves a break! We need balance in our lives and while I can appreciate your dedication and that you want to get a scholarship, keep your mental and physical health in mind too.
  • Awww, visit my mom last night, concert tonight, friend of 10+ years birthday tomorrow night, 30 hours of hw to do in one weekend = Scheduling and Excercise FAILURE

    Lol. Boo social life!
  • I'm back in school and I interned over the summer and working out slowly but surely became an after though but I have to get back on the horse and keep riding!
  • dcapulet, yes there's kind of a gym at my school.. it's actually at the rec centre close by but I think we can use it. I actually just found out about it 2 days ago! I also found out we have sports teams at my school, it's amazing how many people (including me) didn't know about it haha.
Anywho for exercising between classes, prolly not going to happen since I have only 10 minutes between all my classes. Trying to squeeze them all in! After school could work though, then I don't have to worry about being sweaty or stinky during class

Anywho, I have done better exercising this week so far and hopefully next week I'll get even better as I continue to improve at organizing my time.

Good luck souvenirdarling with your weekend! It sounds very busy!

Good on you for getting back on the horse jboogie! I wish you the best of luck.
