Thinking of swimming a bit

  • For some variation. I was thinking of swimming, my swimming skills are pretty bad and ive always felt that i dont realise how unfit i am until i try to swim. This is pretty bad since in New Zealand everyone lives close to water xD

Has anyone had good success for weightloss with swimming? I was thinking of just going once or twice a week, plus going to the gym on other days to do weight lifting and running

Has anyone with asthma felt it has been improved by swimming? its getting to winter now here and i can feel my asthma getting worse. Runnning helps (so does remembering to take my preventative lol >.<) but my dad did diving to help with his asthma, does swimming also help?

Also, i have pretty bad eczema, has anyone got tips for off setting the effects of chlorine? I have a good moisturiser and i plan to rinse off immediately after swimming, is there anything else i could do?

Thank you all in advance You guys really are a life line sometimes
  • I haven't been swimming in forever! The last time I used swimming as "Exercise"/ "physical therapy" though, was a few summers ago when I shattered my ankle. I swam a few times a week, nothing too vigorous, and I shed a few inches. If I had easy access to a pool now, I would totally go for some variation!
  • yeah the 4 gym walls get a bit boring after a while ^_^ And i like the idea of working a lot of muscles at the same time. But ive read that becasue the water cools you swimming has less of an effect on weight loss?
  • I used to love swimming when I was younger, and a trip to the pool recently after a few years of not swimming made me remember why. I wasn't terribly good at swimming, but I could get myself from point A to point B of the swimming pool just fine.

Only qualm I had with swimming is my swimming costume top (it's a two piece), kept ridding up those nasty love handles, and after every lap I had to pull them down.

    GRR. They need to go.
  • yeah mine need to go too!
  • I used to swim on a swim team, I can't say I noticed any weight loss, however I'd been doing that since I was a young kid. Just make sure you don't eat everything in sight after you get out of the pool - swimming makes me SO hungry!!

  • When I was at school I used to swim for my county and was in the pool 4-5 times a week for a few hours at a time, then I stopped all my swimming all together!

I started swimming again a couple of months ago, and it has helped vastly with weight loss, I swim 100 lengths every time I go to the pool and that happens 2-3 times a week! I can definitely say swimming is great for weightloss, plus it changes your shape completely where you build muscle! Go for it and have a great time!
  • SwimGirl - i totally hear you on the hungry thing! i am always STARVING after swimming! why is that?!?

i think swimming is a great addition to any work out plan and will definitely help you lose. it is probably more effective when combined with strength training, like any cardio is, but swim away!
  • thanks guys i think i will start next week, after i am truely over this cold. Combing it with strength training sounds like a great idea I love doing weights, so its nice to think they will compliment each other

Maybe it makes you hungrier because you use more muscles? And you have to use more energy to move because water gives a greater resistance than air, like when you're running?
