Hey all, I need to rant a little and it does have to do with diet and weightloss, so it's relevant!
Anyways, I subscribe to US weekly, and this week's cover is about the "DWTS' diet secrets." Mind you, the women on the show are very thin (but toned). Anyways, on the cover the point on that Julianne Hough doesn't have any carbs except for drinking orange juice. How on earth is that healthy??? My friend, who is a registered dietician and nutritionist, told me that I need to be eating a little more carbs and not so much protein to lose weight (because I'm starting to exercise so much, and it's about portion control). I'm wondering how on earth someone who dances and trains for *8 HOURS* per day can only get their carbs from OJ and not faint. In the article, she talks about her only "splurge": a cup of gummy worms. Shawn Johnson (an Olympic athlete) also nixes carbs.
Why is it that these women are so terrified of carbohydrates, and especially if they're training for 8 hours per day? They need them! In this article, there are only a couple of women profiled that even seem to eat a healthy diet. It just really disappoints me because i can see eating disorder written on so many of their faces.
I can understand cutting back on carbs a little when you're dieting and not exercising so much, but when you're exercising that much, you don't need to cut back so much on carbs (I'm talking totally eliminating them) when you're already really fit and exercising 8 hours per day, five days per week.
Is it just me or does this kind of dieting seem totally absurd?
(I will say that they offer some good advice that I already knew, like eating oatmeal, fruit and veggies, yogurt, fish, grilled chicken, bananas, etc. If anything it showcased women with borderline eating disorders)
BEGIN RANT: I don't read gossip, beauty or celebrity magazines. They only make me feel ugly, fat, worthless and lazy, which I am not. They promote an unhealthy way of life with all the fad diets and "lose 10 pounds the week before Easter!" promotions. I stopped reading them about 10 years or so ago. Even the Women's Health magazines are chock full of "lose your belly for the summer" headlines and tips on dressing 10 pounds thinner- very little in the way of health articles now. DH calls it "Cosmo Lite". Sorry, but I couldn't give a rat's behind on that stuff. END RANT. You may return to your regularly scheduled programming.
The thing that gets me about those women's magazines, Women's World especially, or whatever it's called, is they show a thin woman on every single cover, with a headline that says something like "She lost 85 pounds in 3 weeks! You can too!" and right below it, pictures of the 7 tiered chocolate cake recipe inside the magazine.
Well at least I know they not are as perfect as they seem. It has taught me a lesson though...you have pratically have to go on the cheese diet to look like them ....."OH you don't eat ANYTHING and then when you feel like you are going to faint...you eat a piece of cheese!" - Emily, Devil Wear's Prada
OMG, see I don't take them that seriously. They are so photoshopped in those pictures it's not even funny, so I just consider them 'artistic renditions.' Even Pam Anderson's itty bitty tiny little self has cellulite on her thighs and gets her stomach airbrushed.
I'm a b**** so my FAVORITE part of those mags is when they profile actresses and singers. While Beyonce's 19-inch-waist and Scarlett Johanssen's supposed 33 inch hips were hilariously unbelievable the REAL kicker was Mariah Carey at 108lbs.

Yes! My friends and I have an ongoing joke that a women's magazine MUST have articles on how to look beautiful, lose 20 pounds over night, and a recipe for a giagantic chocolate cake
Those magazines are so messed up so many ways. Case and point: I bought one (I can't remember but I think it was US Weekly) about Tori Spelling and how she lost her baby weight so quick and how great she looks. It was literally a 4 page spread. I was grocery shopping the other day and what do I see on the cover? Tori Spelling is down to 98 pounds and is scary skinny!!!
Cooper- I saw that exact magazine today at CVS. She looks gross! I can't stand seeing pictures of most female celebs! The Olsen twins look awful too. There's skinny and then there's skeletal... Celebs don't seem to know the difference!
I agree she looks waaaay too skinny. IMO she looked too skinny in the 'just lost the baby weight' pictures too. But it's such a fine line with these rags. Like the difference between her being their ideal weight and being scary skinny is probably 10 pounds at the most.
If you want a good magazine, I read Self.....it's about being healthy all over, no celebrity gossip in site. Loves it personally. Check it out on self.com
I must admit I am addicted to magazines, I love buying them. I don't really care what they are about, but I get them. Except for Cosmo because for some reason I feel that is a waste
