Default Major Complication

As many of you know, I have been playing rugby since the beginning of the year. I am loving it and it has done wonders for my weightloss and getting me into shcape. Well, Rugby is no longer my friend. It has turned its back of me and said 'FU'. On Saturday during our last season game I ganaged to break my andle in 4 different places. My doctors say its extremely severe but it should heal fine in 3 months. There is a chance that I will lose some sensation it it, but they can do surgery to fix that. My many breaks require many screws and many plates. That surgery is tomorrow. My question is, How do I continue to lose weight when I am in bed rest for another week and nonweight bearing for 3 months?

This sucks. If you have any suggestions or advice PLEASE let me know.

For those of you who may know what this means, this is exactly what I did: I have a trimaleolar fracture of the ankle, a Medial malelous fracture, a lateral side high fracture and a fracture of the posterior process tibia, webber c fracture, severe dislocation and a syndesymosis fracture a 1/3 up the leg fracture of side of tibia. My surgery on Thursday is an open reduction internal fixation (place few screws in medial condial with a plate on the later side of the ankle and a sydesymotic fixation).

First, I am so sorry about your ankle, I hope your surgery goes well. As for losing weight, you probably can't lose weight as fast as before but you can lose weight. People have said that losing weight is 80% diet 20 % exercise. You can do it, you just need to be really careful about what you eat. Good luck, I hope you heal quickly.

Im very sorry but like Ella said focus on your eating and you can do abs and lift weights as well !

Hi there... hey, sorry to hear about your injury

I just happened to see your post on the main page and thought I'd comment. While I didn't whack my ankle as bad as you did (wow, you must have been playing hard!)... I have had biomalleolar fractures in both legs at different times. I have an underlying neurological problem (bi-lateral footdrop) that makes it super easy for me to roll out my ankles.

Anyway, I had surgery on both of them with internal fixation. A plate and six or seven screws on each of the outer ankles and two long pins on each inner ankle. Surprisingly, the surgeries and healing went pretty good... no major problems from either. If you want any further info on any of that, or reassurance... just PM me.

As far as weight loss, just to give you some hope here... I've been walking on crutches for the last several years (due entirely to the neuropathy, not due to the previous fractures)... and my weight loss so far has not been a problem since starting on New Years Day. I don't do much walking, only about a 1/4 mile a day total, and I sit all day at a computer at work. Still, I have managed to lose 18 lbs in 9 weeks (about 2 lbs a week) just through diet alone. And I'm not starving either... I eat between 1200 and 1700 calories a day, but of course since you weight less yours would be a little different.

Sorry, didn't mean to ramble. Just wanted to offer some reassurance that diet alone may not get you there as fast, but being off your feet for a while doesn't have to be a weight-loss killer either.

Okay, so I did that when I was playing softball in High School. Here's what you do...

Eat healthy.
Find a pool.
Place your ankle in a heavy duty garbage bag.
Use Duck Tape to water-seal it.
Slowly get into pool.

I swear, I did this over the summer and lost thirty pounds! (I broke my ankle right before getting out of school for summer break!)

I second the pool, lifting weights, doing crunches! and eating healthy. Since you're less active - ask about how your diet should change, you won't need as much food I assume.... but ask about it! Ask if there's any ways to stay active/healthy.

Aw man... I'm sorry. That really, really sucks.

I broke my ankle pretty bad in high school and was on crutches for the better part of 4 years. However, this was due to medical malpractice (damn, should have sued) because the first doctor I saw didn't want to do surgery and the second had to rebreak everything and did a poor job of fixing it. I ended up having 4 surgeries! Ugh. Anyways, here's my advice:

-Being on crutches is a WORKOUT! Your arms will actually be super buff and I advise crutching everywhere.
-As time goes on, see if your MD allows you to ride a recumbent bike. It looks kind of ridiculous to do that while in a cast, but your ankle is completely immobilized so as long as you're not pushing hard on the resistance it's nice to do.
-Eat super healthy. You're not going to be able to burn off enough calories to burn off bad food, even though you want the comfort... I learned that the hard way!

Anyway, hope you're feeling better soon! Haha, hopefully they gave you pain meds, which usually make you a little nauseous, so you wouldn't be eating anyway!

Oh, and I second the crutch workout... I don't know how I forgot that!! Super buff arms are always a plus!

My break was pretty bad too! I had plates on both sides of my ankle to stableize it, and I have screws still inside that hold it together... Definately can tell when cold weather is coming! lol
