Filling Foods

What kinds of healthy foods fill you up the most and keep you feeling full for a while? When I eat well, I feel like I can keep eating nonstop! I eat around 1400 calories daily..and when I reach that, I'm still hungry!

My philosphy (based on failed diets in the past and the only thing that has ever worked for me) is to stay away from as many carbs as possible. They fill you up quickly, but are also used up quickly. This is true of 'good and bad' carbs. Foods like beans, nuts, cheeses and meats will fill you up and keep you full because they take longer to digest. WW filling foods have green diamonds on them. I'd follow their recommendations, steering clear of most carbs.

Oatmeal!!

I'd be careful with nuts and cheese as they are higher calorie. When I do want nuts I only eat almonds that are roasted without salt.

Things I eat to help keep me full are prunes, oranges, large salads with plenty of veggies and low cal dressings.

One salad I love to make is cut up cucumber with cut up tomatoe- if you like onion you can add a tiny bit of that too. Then I buy this spice called sumac- its made to put into salads, marinade meats, and put on rice but you have to find a middle eastern store that sells them as it's not found at your local grocery store. Sprinkle a generous amount on that and then put some lemon juice on it- a tiny bit of salt, and boom a large salad that has probably less than 100 calories! It's so good :D

I agree with jahjah on the oatmeal. I eat it for breakfast every morning and it lasts a long time.

redflatshoe2 02-09-2009 12:30 PM

This is my typical breakfast
1/2 cup berries (~40 cals)
1 wedge LF laughing cow cheese (35 cals)
2 hard boiled eggs, no yolk (34 cals) or small slice of lean ham (50 cals)
and tea

This breakfast is filling, it looks a lot on my plate but only 100-125 cals/meal.

peal barley added to soup is very filling

Another oatmeal fan here!! I eat it with strawberries, blackberries or blueberries before my morning workouts, but only 1/4 to 1/2 cup. This doesn't sound like much, but for me, it REALLY gives me a lot of energy.

In the middle of the day I'll snack on string cheese. The lite ones only have 60 cals and taste really good. Also, I don't wait until I'm dying of hunger to snack.......that's what makes me go overboard.

Try volumetrics!

Lately I add cauliflower to everything! I make it into "cauliflower rice" to bulk up meals. Today I made some and topped it with a big spoonful of healthy chili for a filling bowl with few calories and lots of fiber and nutrients.

Don't mean to sound repetitive but oatmeal here too! 1/4 cup oatmeal with 1/2 cup frozen blueberries (put in for last 50 sec of microwave)
The difference is that I put 2 tbsp ground flax seed for the fibre and 1/4 cup *dry* cottage cheese for protein.
I'm not hungry at all until lunch time with this concoction.

Otherwise, my staple snacks that fill up rather than drive up the hunger are: 1/2 oz cheese, 1/2 oz. almonds, orange/apple, 3 oz. plain lf yogurt w/honey

FIBER!

I buy double fiber bread (14grams for 2 slices) and eat lots of fruit and veggies.

Also giving up diet coke really worked!!!

I try and stay away from "low calorie" things and eat less of more whole foods.

corazonas 02-09-2009 01:58 PM

hmm... one thing that fills me up REALLY well is 1 cup Fiber One cereal mixed with one container of yoplait (or whatever yogurt you eat) F.O. is really bland so it just ends up being this BIG bowl of crunchy boston cream pie yogurt (thats my fave) for about 230 cals. i actually ate that at 9am and now at 1pm im contemplatng lunch because i'm still not really hungry!

also, i love progresso vegetable soups. i try to eat the ones withOUT rice or noodles. the whole can is about 120 cals and it's a big bowl. very filling. my fave is Southwest vegetable whatever. it's mexican flavors and a little spicy. love it!

For me it is a burrito on a whole wheat tortilla with black beans, tofu, brown rice and salsa. Very filling! I'd rather eat a big meal where I get really satisfied and a couple small meals than space them out evenly.
