How do you respond?

Maybe I'm not very good at small talk, but I find it difficult to come up with a response when my co-workers notice my weight loss. I work in the bakery department in a grocery store so I can talk freely about it with my department colleagues, but when someone from another department makes this comment! "You've lost weight!" Like it's not a question, it's just a statement. I always feel weird about just saying Thank you. I feel like it would be worse to say nothing at all but I feel really sheepish when I end up in that conversation.

So what do you say to people you don't know particularly well when they talk about your weight loss?

I just brush it off and go "yeah" I don't like compliment... but I secretly am excited inside...

jahjah1223 01-14-2009 11:25 PM

I try to brush i off normally but sometimes i think that it just makes me feel a bit cocky.. so i try to thank them as much as i can even if it gets pretty uncomfortable when its the same people on and on .. you dont know if they are happy for you or they just started hating you for it.. lol

I've learned its just best to say "thank you" and sometimes I tell them how much they have made my day just by noticing! Kind of makes them feel better about speaking out what they thought. Plus it really does make me feel good inside. But I am TOTALLY a people person and do small talk for a living sooooo I get kind of used to lots of weird comments.

I normally just say "yep" and smile. If they ask more questions I answer them but I mostly leave it at that.

garstar 01-14-2009 11:54 PM

say thanks and compliment them back :)

Its very thrilling for me when someone notices, but yet at the same time I'm like you, and don't know what to say. I haven't had this happen but maybe a few times in my lifetime.

When someone you hardly know, says that as a statement I guess I would just say "Yep! I sure have!" with a big smile, and go about my business.

Taylor86 01-14-2009 11:58 PM

I say "yes I am thank you"

....but that hasnt happened yet. LE SIGH!

redlight 01-15-2009 02:32 AM

Thank you and a smile.

when i went home for xmas, everyone i know told me how much weight i lost. some even referred to it as " a ton of weight" which is weird, bc i really didn't lose that much.

anyway, when they said that, i replied:

"thank you, it's taken a lot of hard work"

which is true. all the hard work and fighting with yourself about exercise or food choices. don't brush that off. own it, you deserve it.

TJFitnessDiva 01-15-2009 02:50 PM

I usually just smile and tell them "thank you"

LizzieBee 01-15-2009 03:05 PM

I think a polite "thanks!" would be just fine!

misspiggy408 01-15-2009 07:43 PM

Just take it as a compliment girl ... say thanks! :)

"You've lost weight!" Says they.

"A little bit. Thank you." Says I.

Hehe, that wouldn't have worked today when I saw someone who hadn't seen me since April (before I lost 57 pounds). It was interesting, but not bad.
