Default Let's talk...healthier pizza choices.

So my family really likes getting pizza--take out/delivery pizza. I *love* pizza, but for obvious reasons--it's something I avoid. I was wondering if any has heard anything about Pizza Hut's new "Natural Pizza" and if it's any lower in fat or better for you? What about their "Fit N' Delicious" pizzas? Anyone tried those? The FnD pizzas are suppose to be like 140 calories a slice--so two of those is an acceptable meal.

What I did the other day...they got Papa Johns pizza, some type of meal deal where you get a second 1 topping pizza. Normally I would have put pepperoni on it but I decided to get it with just fresh tomatoes on it and it still turned out really good! I know the cheese and crust are still killer, but I was pleased with myself for getting something a little healthier and that I enjoyed it just the same! Thoughts?

WE make homemade pizza now and it's really changed my taste for pizza. I can't stand any of the delivery pizzas any more. They're just ... icky.

If you have to order pizza, you're better off getting a thin crust with veggies. Avoid any of the meats as they're greasy and full of fat and calories.

Funny you mention pizza. I was looking at recipes and came across one I want to try. My fave part of the pizza is the topping so this one is something I can put whatever I want on it and it still be a healthier option. I found it over on the SBD forum.

I also just found this website...

You can request half the amount of cheese, that helps cut calories. Load up on veggie toppings, too. Never add meat, they are full of fat and calories. Plus, I'm told that most use really bad quality meats.

Actually, my son has worked in them all and I could probably tell you plenty of stories about pizza places that will turn you into a 'made from scratch at home' pizza chef Making pizza is a lot of fun, and you can control every calorie

I sometimes take a pita bread. Cut it in half so that I am left with 2 rounds. Put on a bit of marinara sauce. Sprinkle it with finely grated low fat mozzerella (the fact that it is finely grated makes it spread better). Then I add on some veggies - red onion, bell peppers, mushrooms...

One of the things we do in the summer is grill pizza. It's yummy and I can eat a lot of pizza for around 500 cals ... smothered in veggies.

Here's one from a few months ago - whole wheat crust, homemade tomato sauce, tons of veggies, and a little cheese to hold it all together:

We love pizza too, but we hardly ever buy it anymore.

You're so much better off making your own. I know making pizza crust sounds hard, but it's SO not! Here is a recipe for quick and easy pizza crust. It only has 2T oil in it. [EDIT: Forgot to say, just pre-bake it for a few minutes before you add toppings and sauce.] The trick to rolling it out is to stretch it from the middle outward. I looked up videos on how to do it on you tube.

One batch makes enough pizza for my family of 5. And it takes about the same amount of time to have a pizza delivered as it does to make it!

That way you're in control of what goes on it. I use sauce from a can or jar, put low fat cheese and veggies on it, and save SO many calories (and money!)

Oh that looks good

The only place in town I'll buy pizza from is a local bakery that bakes pizza in a wood fired brick oven. It tastes smoky Toppings include things squash, smoked tomatoes, red and white onions, mushrooms, basil, spinach, roasted garlic, blackberries, pears, apples, and much much more. It's amazing how the flavor pops when you add fruit to the smoky tomato base. Different types of cheeses and sauces, too. Nothing 'traditional'.

Or you could always take a huge portabello mushroom, turn it on it's top and cover it with cheeses, veggies and meat if you want.
Bake it at 375 utnil the cheese melts and it is DELICIOUS! i'd almost prefer that to any delivery I can think of!

The fit n delicious pizza from pizza hut does taste good, but you'll have to eat half the pizza to feel satisfied! and it is a bit pricey too. I'd go with homemade! There are some good recipes out there.

During the last few months, I started to make pizza myself at home. I take pita bread, bake it for about 6 minutes, then top with some healthy no sugar added pasta sauce, ground turkey breast cooked with a bit of salt, chopped garlic/onions/green peppers/mushrooms, and a bit of 2% milk cheese. I top it with some dried oregano, which really adds a nice full-bodied flavor.

Bake at 425 degrees for 17 minutes.

I like using the ground turkey breast because the protein makes the meal filling, and you don't get hungry too soon afterwards. Also it tastes great.

I make my own pizza crust out of chickpeas and oatmeal for a healthier option I was doing the Fat Smash diet and fell in love with this recipe

Crust:
1 cup oatmeal
1/2 can of garbanzo beans (chickpeas)
1 egg white
>1 tsp extra virgin olive oil
basil, oregano, crushed red pepper, italian seasoning, garlic salt,
to taste

Blend ingredients in blender/food processor until smooth. You may
add a little water to loosen up ingredients. However, make sure to
keep mixture like a dough-like consistency.

Bake in oven at 400 degrees until edges lift off from pan and the
crust looks cracked.

Trust me it is really really good
