knee braces?

  • I was wondering if anyone was familiar with knee braces...I was playing a bit of floor hockey and I think I pulled a muscle around my knee (i.e. it feels stretched when my leg is the completely straight position - I must have locked and turned or something during the game). I've suspected for awhile that my one leg is slightly shorter than the other, though I don't know if this is attributed to it. I've been doing some slow jogging a couple times a week with no problems, but floor hockey is more short sprints and quick turns.

Does anyone think that some sort of knee brace/support would help? If so, are there any brands/stores that you can recommend that work well for overweight people? (I'm in Ottawa). (I remember in the past that I always had troubles with fitting things like knee pads because of the part of my leg just above my knee - you know, that extra padding on the inside that makes the part just above your knee disproportionately larger than the part below... ). Though, of course I'll have to wait and see that my knee feels normal before playing again - but the thought of having to stop is bumming me out! It was our first game!

If anyone has any suggestions, they would be much appreciated!

    Thanks!
  • I know you can get tensor bandages with inserts to support the knee (pull over). However, when I pulled my knee about 4 weeks ago, I could not get it to fit as it was one size fits all, and I am not a one size fit all kind of gal That being said, be very careful about pushing your knee too hard. Knees are mostly comprised of ligaments and muscles, which are slow to heal and are easier to re-injure if not healed completely. I would say take the time to get completely better before pushing your knee to hard, ice and wrap (if there is swelling). Even four weeks later, I am still a little stiff as I did not take care of it as well as I should have when I injured it.
  • Thanks, Carol! I might see if I can find some tensor bandages, but I'm pretty sure that I'm not a one-size-fits-all girl either! It's the same with soccer socks - I bought some to use with the soccer shin guards I have, and of course they don't fit over my calves! Why on earth was I thinking they would?

I iced my knee (there was no swelling - it was more of a strain for a muscle in the back of my knee) and today it feels about 95% normal, but I'm giving it a break over the long weekend or until it feels 100% before I do anything with it again.

    Take care...
  • AS far as knee braces, You can get ones made from neoprene from leg measurements. You might want to check with a physical therapist which is where I got mine. Not sure of the cost as mine was covered by insurnace.
  • I twisted my knee one day and it hasn't been the same since. It isn't a good thing. I went to the chiropractor and he told me that the pain was from all the other mucles tightening up in an attempt to favor the part that was hurt. He showed me how to massage the muscles behind the leg, above the knee, on the inside and outside of the leg. Some of those muscles go right into the crease of the knee on the back side.

You might try massaging those muscles. It might help some with the pain. I'm not sure what will help it heal and not hurt any more. Weight loss probably (in my case too). But short of that, you may have to deal with it a long time like I have. Maybe you should go to the doctor now before it gets to that point.
