How often do you weigh in?
I have always been programmed to weigh in weekly, probably just out of habit. But while browsing the forum I noticed that many people weigh daily.
How often do you weigh in and why? What do you feel are the benefits of your weigh in schedule? I am determined to succeed in getting healthy this time around and I am always open to new ideas. Any insight would be greatly appreciated. |
Like you, I'm in the process of losing weight. So I keep a weight chart where I set weekly goals for myself and weigh every Wednesday morning. I also weigh every Saturday just to make sure I'm on track.

Everyday in the morning and in the night before bed. Why? cause i'm on a cyclical ketogenic diet in which i tend to gain some water weight depending on the amounts of carbs, so i really like to take track on my weight depending on what i eat.

I weigh in too much. I want to go back to once a week.

I weigh every morning and keep track of it and what I eat. Helps me to see patterns...like eating too much salt puts on 2-3 pounds for a couple days. Too many carbs also bloats me for a couple days. Also let's me see if I need to adjust my calorie intake. It's part of my routine to make sure I stay on track.

Daily. If I know what's good for me.

It's really a personal choice but daily weighing has been an immense help to me. I've been told all my life that daily weighing=obsession+eating disorders. Um... NO. Ok, it might be triggery for some. Calorie counting is triggery for me but works for many people so I don't do it and let others do it while not worrying about them having eating disorders. The same goes for daily weighing.
As to why I do it: - it's a great reminded every morning about what I'm doing, why I'm doing it and I just love seeing that I'm in the 160's now after years of being in the 200's!!! - I've learned my daily fluctuations and know what to expect after a workout (I gain 1-2lbs) or during TOM/ovulation (again 1-3lb gain) - I don't miss low weights! My body fluctuations often so weighing once a week, if that happened to land while i was ovulating or TOM could potentially mean that I miss a new low weight (especially since I often drop a pound the day before TOM starts!). -I'm impatient to see new results. I lose slowly so every pound is a victory - I see immediately if I start gaining. It's all about a trends. I've been at this over 1.5 years now and thankfully have not had any regaining periods. BUT if I were to, I'd be able to catch it immediately. - I don't spend time wondering what I weigh at the moment and obsessing about it. |

I weigh daily just for tracking purposes. It helps me plan my days menu. If I went up, I adjust for it.
I update my profile weekly on Tuesday. And that as my official weight for my spreadsheets. |

I also like weighing daily because, after doing it for almost a year, I can literally know 'oh, i ate such and such and then i was up for 4 days...' but I now KNOW it was sodium or carbs and it was not fat... It also helped me not be so... not dread the number so much. Seeing it start with 2 so often has taken the TWO HUNDRED POUNDS!?!?!? fear/anticipation out of it. I care that I weigh that, but, heck, it doesn't stress me out as it once did. I'm at 202... STILL AGAIN... lol... but, I know sooner than later I'll be in the 190's and seeing 202 for the 6th day in a row will not end me, it will make me more likely to stay on track! :D Good luck! |
Having to see the number every day makes me think about it from the morning on. I get complacent if I don't weigh often- and something in me is triggered to think that 'this brownie won't count..' etc. I started doing it to understand my body's weight patterns (now I can pinpoint most reasons my weight is up a few pounds randomly) and also I know logically that I can't gain, say, three pounds overnight so I don't freak out about it (although I do sulk, sometimes, if it's a bad day- however, the positivity of daily weigh in usually 'outweighs' the damaging days!) Oh, and also I don't go as crazy if my 'official' weigh-in isn't that great- I know that there were days that I was lower and I'll be there sooner than I think. I keep a small journal in the bathroom with the scale and have started circling the numbers that count as my weekly weigh in. Also, I write in reasons my weight is likely up next to the weight, and it's almost always sodium or some kind of workout.

Every morning, whether I am losing or maintaining. Given that I can gain a good ten pounds before my clothes don't fit anymore, the scale gives me immensely more data to control my choices with, since I can tell exactly what is going on with my body. When I weighed weekly, it was a bad idea - I could talk myself into overeating right after a weigh in, because 'I have all week to get it off'.
And as we all know, that kind of thinking is no good. |
I plan to weigh in once a week on Mondays, then when I reach goal, probably for the next year or two, I'll weigh in DAILY to make sure it STAYS OFF! lol
|
I weighed daily while I was losing but only counted Wednesday as my official weight and kept track of it on a chart. Now I weigh every couple days. I tried going from the first Wednesday of one month to the next, but that's too long for me to go. I especially like to check for a few days after I know I've been off plan so I can see how bad it is!
During maintenance I only record the first Wednesday's weight. So far this has worked well. Lin |
I weigh every Monday. If I weigh more often I stress too much about fluctuations.
