?? for those who've been pregnant

  • Ok so I'm now past the halfway mark and thus far have actually lost 10 pounds at the beginning of this pregnancy. I still weigh in every Tuesday and I've been fluctuating between 283 and 285. But the past few weeks it's either been 283.5-284. This morning it was 287.5!!!! I know this is all good for the baby and as an overweight pregnant woman I can expect to gain about 20 pounds but it's still hard to accept a 4 pound gain!!! I've been handling the 1/2 pound a week gains with little to no problems. Any advice for making myself feel better about gaining 4 pounds. (Even though I've been overweight my whole life, there are very few times I actually "feel fat." this morning was one of those times and even with my husband giving me a great big hug after I told him I felt fat and telling me I'm beautiful and he loves me it still didn't help.)

Thank you for letting me ramble.

  • Aw, sweetie. I know it's hard. But it's something that's just going to happen. There is no explaining it. All you can do is trust in the fact that you are eating healthy, getting some exercise, drinking your water and loving that baby to death. The lbs. will come. {{{BIG HUGS}}}
  • I gained 44 lbs while pregnant last year and lost most of it in the first 3 weeks after my baby was born. Don't worry about it. As long as your dr is okay with your weight it isn't that important right now. Now is the time to be thinking about being as healthy as you can be for that baby you are growing.
  • Another thing to remember is that you may be retaining water. It's hot out. During my last pregnancy I got a lot of swelling. That can make you gain weight as well. Pound the water to you and keep working out and eating right. I lost 40lbs in the first 3 months of my pregnancy from being sick all the time and the doctors said that since my baby was growing it was ok.

Your doing fine. This will happen, you will gain weight. It's ok. Most of it will go away when the baby is born. Just relax and take care of yourself and your baby.

  • Dawnyal, when I was pregnant with my daughter I gained 10 pounds in TWO WEEKS during my 7th month! Doctor wasn't happy about it, either...After that, though, I only gained another 8 or 9 lbs. (for a grand total of 66! ).

The best thing you can do for you and for your baby right now is to just eat healthily (and try not to give in to the cravings I craved Taco Bell with my daughter and KFC with my son.)
  • I gained 50 pounds when I had my twins twelve years ago and
the doctor didn't even bat an eye. I was 270 at delivery and
down to 230 in six weeks. My big fear was I was scheduled
for a c-section and I was terrified of having my stomach
sutured because of my size. Everything turned out just fine.
Babies weighed 7pds 71/2 oz and 6 pds 3 oz.
    Good Luck and Best Wishes!
  • Jennelle.. I did the same as you!! Gained 11 lbs within a two week period in my 7 th month. Up until that point I had only gained 7 lbs. I cried the whole way home, I thought I was doing so good.

Dawnyal.. right now your baby has more control over your body then you do... just wait till he/she comes out - they will then have control over your whole life

I know it's hard - but "this too shall pass"
Continue to eat healthy food - you will see the benefit after the baby is born, I promise!

  • Hi 2 full term pregs here-
First: I started out at 150 and delivered at 225-I gained most of it in the last 10 weeks and it freaked my midwives out my BP went up as well and was insanely high during delivery. I think I lost about 30 pounds in the months after delivery but no scale at the time.

My second baby I started at 250 and lost a bit of weight at first then gradually gained to deliver at 275. BP was high in last 4 weeks again. As for skin elacticity etc. I do have stretch marks from the second pregnancy, lower abdomen, I used a lot of vitamin e oil too. Now as I shrink excess skin has become a concern, no complaints really, not yet but in the next 50 pounds who knows. There is an interesting thread over on the weight loss surgery forum about excess skin.

As for what's best for the baby, I would say make sure you are getting lots of protein and healthy unsaturated fats. I drank a lot of soy fruit smoothies, sipped them throughout the day, blood sugar crashes suck in pregnancy. Don't limit calories but make them count. Eat a cucumber every day, great natural diuretic, drink tons of water (live on the toilet ; ) ) and remember many larger women have great pregnancies and births, and you can expect to lose 20 pounds at least within the first month post-partum and choose to breast feed for so many great reasons, speedy weight loss among them!

Lastly those tables they use to determine optimum weight gain are bunk. They are revised so often that it's become clear that we just need to listen to our bodies.

    Good luck!

  • I'm really doing better. Thanks for all the advice and words of wisdom. It was just a shock seeing a 4 pound gain in one week when I used to be so focused on losses or at the least maintaining. I admit it I'm not eating as healthy as I should but after Thursday that will change--we're getting back my stepson so I'll start planning meals. For the past 2 months hubby and I have pretty much lived on takeout and occassional homecooked meals. I'm also not exercising like I should. I live out in the country and I hate walking. I don't want to walk in the pasture for fear of snakes and the paved road in front of my house is actually pretty busy. The next time I'm in Wal-Mart I plan on buying me a pregnancy aerobics video so it will be something for me to do.
I can say one thing I have been faithful with has been my water and juices. That's never been a problem with me.

I know my nurse will be happy to learn I've gained something. The last time I weighed with them I was down 2 pounds.

  • OK girl rest and do not worry so much the mid point is where your body does take in extra fluid so do not sweat it. make sure that you continue to eat right did you eat some thing with extra salt?? the heat could be causing fluid retention. just relax if the doc was worried then he would let you know.
  • Hey Barbygirl!
Congrats again on your pregnancy. When I read you gained 4 pounds in a week I knew it was water retention. You couldnt have possibly gained 4 pounds of fat in a week! It is incredibly hot which even gets the non pregos to retain water!! After you give birth you will lose a lot in the first week or two-so try not to worry so much! When I got pregnant I weighed 250. I gained 30 pounds but at my two week check up (I had a c-section) I had already lost 20 of it-so it was mostly fluid gained---and breast feeding helped some too!!)
God bless you and stay COOL!!
