Default Stuff I've Learned

As I enter my 44th year on this planet, I have learned a few things....

1. That emotions are neither right nor wrong--they just are. They are a guidance for our lives. Negative emotion tells us to head a different direction.

2. That my way of doing things (dieting, parenting, etc.) may not be YOUR way of doing things, but it does not make mine better than yours, or vice versa. The "it works for me" philosophy really applies here.

3. That we NEED each other, no matter where we are on our journey. We use each other as guideposts and indicators that we are on the right path. You may have some important information I need to reach my destination...same goes for me to you. I need the "big losers" to help me find my way; likewise, the "big losers" need ME to remind them where they came from.

4. That every thought I think, every choice I make, every word I say aloud, shapes who I am. Therefore, choosing my thoughts and words carefully can only make me better.

5. That.... .I AM W O R T H Y of every good thing in the Universe. My value is NOT dependant on three numbers that appear on a bathroom appliance, but how I live each moment, how I treat others, and most importantly, how I treat myself.

Wanted to add this: (DISCLAIMER: I am NOT a Miley Cyrus fan, but the lyrics to the chorus of her song "The Climb" are really good.)

There's always going to be another mountain
I'm always going to want to make it move
Always going to be an uphill battle,
Sometimes I'm gonna to have to lose,
Ain't about how fast I get there,
Ain't about what's waiting on the other side
It's the climb

Good post, Jen. Us 40-somethings have learned a lot! It's good to share!

Like my daughter said... it's a good song, too bad it had to be Miley's! ha!

That is a lot of good wisdom there...#s 4 & 5 especially resonate with me. Thanks so much for sharing!

I enjoyed "The Climb" lyrics as well. The whole song is pretty inspirational.

All excellent. I think I'm latest to the game with #4, but I've been learning it over the past several years. It doesn't matter if someone else really is wrong, or deserves to be treated the way they're treating others, or whatever. What *I* choose to do still shapes who *I* am.

lol.....I saw Miley perform that song on American Idol last night. I had never heard the song before but I really liked the chorus too.

Thanks y'all....life is just so short, I don't want to spend any energy on thing that, in the end, do not matter.
