I bought some frozen strawberries, and I would like to make a smoothie for breakfast a couple times a week. I get tired of the cereal, oatmeal, eggs, and such, so I thought I would make a drink. I looked on the package and it is only 45 calories for 1/2 cup of strawberries.
My question is.. what else do I add to it? I am really not sure what to mix with it or how much, while still keeping it healthy and under 210 calories or so.
I have a smoothie every morning. I use unsweetened Almond Breeze for the liquid base. It's only 40 calories per cup. I vary the fruits based on what I have on hand, but here's an example of the one I have ready for tomorrow morning:
3/4 c Almond Breeze
3/4 c frozen strawberries
1/4 c frozen raspberries
1 T goji berries
2 T ground flaxseed
1/2 medium banana
2 packets of Splenda
Ice
Calories: 245
Blend and enjoy....
My trainer has me getting 2T of ground flaxseed everyday which is why I started making smooties. I've found it to be the easiest way for me to get it in. I've recently started adding the goji berries because they are another good addition.
Somedays I use blueberries, today I tried pineapple...just experiment to see what you enjoy.
I am pretty simple. I mix 1 cup frozen berries, 1/2 a cup of vanilla yogurt (I use source by yoplait as it is about 35 cal per serving ) and then I add 1/2 a cup of strawberry banana juice (in the cartons by sunripe I believe) and then mix it all together and go... it is delicious and always fills me up!!!

Ground Flaxseed is high in fiber and Omega-3s. Here's a link to WebMD's explaination of the benefits.
It doesn't taste bad, it's more of a texture thing. It doesn't dissolve so you need to figure out how you like it. There are lots of recipes and ideas on the web. It can be added to cereal, breads, muffins, etc. I've also just mixed it with cranberry juice and chugged it. For me the morning smoothies work well.
Oh...if you have the calories to spare a little peanut butter is yummy in smoothies.
I love virgin strawberry daquiris. I just use frozen berries and very low calorie liquid (tea with Splenda, diet lemonade, Sprite or Mountain Dew.) I know Diet Mountain Dew is not a health food, but I don't drink coffee so when I want morning caffeine, the tea or Diet Mountain Dew fits the bill.
If I drink breakfast, I never seem to feel full for long, and I'm not really fond of sweet things for the main portion of breakfast. So the virgin daquiri with a a blt sandwhich is one of my favorite breakfasts. I use Hellman's canola oil mayo (50 calories per tablespoon) and I'll use either veggie bacon or regular bacon (I use a lot of lettuce and only two slices of bacon), on the thinnest whole wheat toast I can find. I add lots of lettuce, sprouts if I have them and a super thin slice of tomato (cucumber slices are really good too).
about the flax seeds. they keep longer if you buy the whole seeds, but they need to be ground to be able to digest them and get the full benefits. i use mine mixed with yogurt. its not bad, but not particularly tasty either. they have many health benefits. they really help with moving out the poo
i love smoothies for breakfast too. an example of mine is:
a handfull or two of strawberries, a third of a pineapple chopped, a handful of blueberries, maybe a half of a banana, half a cup of nonfat yogurt, a tbsp of honey and a tiny bit of water. its yummy. you can use any fruit you like, but pineapple really makes any smoothie good and you dont need any sugar because its already sweet. (the honey is a superfood which is why i use it)
For anyone who doesn't like the taste of flax, chia seeds have the same great benefits, and are virtually flavourless. Unlike flax seeds they don't need to be ground prior to using either, which adds to the convenience.
