If you're a high-volume eater (when left to your natural inclinations), it is ridiculously easy to out-eat any level of exercise.

I'm another vote for running/weights and portion control. Like almost everyone else mentioned you must have good running shoes. I recommend Brooks or Asics. Start out fast walking and eventually work your way up to jogging intervals with walking in between. It sucks at first but you'll eventually build stamina and jog a mile without stopping...then 3 miles. Give it a try. You can do it.
