So, I'm going to help chaperon a retreat next week. Thing is, the food there SUCKS and his horrible for you. Seeing as i'm watching what i'm eating, this is going to be kind of difficult. I went to these camps /retreat no more than 2 years ago and i've always had issues getting healthy options-- hence, i used to drop 5 pounds in 4 days just because i WOULDN'T eat what they had (starvation= BAD). I don't want to kill my metabolism!
Without going into a lot of detail about what i eat and what they serve, do yall think it is a good idea to bring my own food?
I go on retreats and camping. We've had hit or miss with food. It's such a bummer to be captive without any food choices. I also think it's hard to chat with folks during breaks and connect if I'm drinking water and eating some strange side thing.
I usually do bring my own additions...sometimes more and sometimes less depending on how optimistic I am to the group's food options. The only problems I've faced is trying to make the food survive the traveling and avoid attracting critters.
Hope you have some options like hot water for mixing or other amenities.
I go camping all the time, but we go on our own, so I have control over what food we bring. It's still a challenge not having a full kitchen to work with, etc., but I was hoping I would have some advice for you. Being that you're going to a "camp" where they serve the food...then, yes, that is much more of a challenge!
I would say at least try to bring some supplimental items that will travel well (i.e., granola/protein bars, hardier fruits/veggies, that sort of thing.) If you have to eat "bad" food, just try to keep your portions reasonable. As you said, starvation is bad. It's better to eat a little bit of something not so healthy than to eat nothing at all! At least it's only for a week...you can't do TOO much damage as long as you keep things in check and still get some healthy foods in here and there!
Bring nuts! Nuts stay well, make a good, satisfying meal, and if portioned correctly are not going to blow your calorie limit. Also, a protein bar or two that aren't loaded with sugar would be a good idea to bring.
It is a good idea to bring your own food if you can.
However, if you cannot, you will be just fine. Eating less than normal for 4 days is not going to kill your metabolism. Conversely, eating off plan for 4 days isn't going to torpedo your entire plan.
Do the best you can either way - bring what you can bring, eat as well as you can under the circumstances, and just get back to normal when the retreat is over. Don't let yourself stress too much over it - it's just a few days.
Maybe bring a few staples and eat around the really bad stuff. Like, I'd probably bring some fruit, some carrots and celery and maybe some nuts. Then, if there was something during supper I absolutely didn't want to eat, I'd have something to snack on later.
