Dietary fat and body fat don't have the kind of direct connection it seems you think they do... for instance, a person can't lose body fat simply by eating less fat, or gain body fat JUST by eating more fats. It's often the case that overweight people who eat fatty diets eat mostly unhealthy fats, refined carbs, etc. but the fat in and of itself isn't making people fat.
A lot of us (myself included) got overweight bc of high carb/sugar food intake (combined with chronic inactivity). My family and I have been eating low-fat forever and we're all overweight but assumption always was "well, we eat low-fat foods, we shouldn't be fat! Our bodies are defective bc we're fat despite the low-fat foods we eat!" Not true.
The key is to eat a balance diet full of healthy fats, healthy carbs and protein. Don't be afraid to eat fat... it's not like for every gram of fat you eat, you gain a gram of body fat or anything like that.
