Default cross posted health question for veggies

i posted this in the "dieting with obstacles" section, but i wanted to get an opinion from the veggies on here since its related:

anyone notice changes in their period. i stopped taking birth control in july followed by one dose of Plan B that same month. since then i have not had a normal period. i experienced spotting mid cycle. shorter cycles and now longer cycles these last two months. i even took a pregnancy test last month, which resulted negative. and the next day, i got my period.

and now it's the 32nd day of this cycle. (read: 32 days since the start of my last period).

im just really confused and not sure whats going on. seeing a health care professional is not the best option i have right now, otherwise i would have done that first.

ive consulted my friend the internet numerous times, and came up with possibilities about stopping birth control, the plan b, and also changing my diet and exercise. all of those things pretty much happened all at once.

also, my diet includes mostly vegs, fruits, eggs, dairy, nuts, cereals like oats.
i've read that vegetarians and vegans dont really get their periods... is this true??

vegetarians and vegans certainly do get their periods. Vegans (from an early age) tend to get their periods in their late teens from what I've read.

It may be that you have PCOS or something else that is messing with your cycle. Who knows?

1. 32 days isn't all that long-- sounds like it's more than one usual cycle but not a full missed cycle?

2. I suspect that this is a Plan B thing. It's certainly not because you're not eating animal products and at 150 pounds you're not so underweight that your periods should stop by virtue of weight alone.

3. If your online research hasn't gotten you to the LiveJournal community vaginapagina yet, I think that would be a great next step for info.

vaginapagina- that made me lol. but thanks for the info.

the only thing that makes me wonder if its plan b, is that i took it back in july 08. seems like a long time ago to still be feeling the after effects. but idk.

yeah im not sure why, but i found all these sites relating lack of meat and longer cycles, something to do with producing less estrogen.

You've guessed that that site is not work-safe, right?

Please say yes-- I feel horrible for not mentioning it to begin with.

It may be due to having gone off the pill. I went off for a year and never had a normal period that whole year. I was late, I was early, I'd spot in between. I'd been on the pill for about 10 years previous to that, so I had been on a very regular schedule. Anyway, it made me so crazy, I finally went on again.

Sadly, yes, we vegans and vegetarians do get our periods, so it's very unlikely that's your problem.

ok, so this may still be birth control related. bc i was on birth control for most of the time in the last ten years. pretty much the length since the onset of my period. so it's always been pretty regular.

the last birth control i was on was the nuvaring, and im not sure if it has something to do with that particular method, either.

but its driving me crazy

and no worries about the work safe disclaimer! heh

I agree with Darby and think it's most likely going off the pill. I stopped taking it in April of last year and had cycles that ranged from 40 days to 20 days. It's just now getting more normal and averaging 30 day cycles.
There are of course health factors that cause delayed periods so you shouldn't completely ignore it but don't panic

darby- ok so yours are still irregular too. i read on the interwebz that it could take "several" months to regulate. but wtf is several. i think of several as about 3-4.... so i was getting worried there.

/breaths a bit easier
