  • Reves and Carol Sue I didn't really feel like doing the exercise on the recumbent bike today either, but I too found that when I finished that I felt sooo good. I also find that it helps me want to stay OP with my eating. I have never had the elliptical or even tried one. I don't think I would like doing it. I really wish I had a treadmill so I could do some walking on it. I used to love to put on music and walk to it. Sounds like we are all working at getting our exercise started again.
  • Quote: The sad thing is that using my diabetic meter I soon learned that I cannot do a high fiber diet because my stomach will not tolerate it plus foods that supposedly would lower my bs actually spiked it.
Do all high-fiber foods cause problems for you, or only some?
It may take time for your body to adjust to more fiber, so increasing fiber gradually may help.
If you have problems when eating beans, the enzyme alpha-galactosidase might help (see this study).
If grains cause problems for you, it's possible that you might have an intolerance to gluten (and if that's the case, you can switch to gluten-free grains).

I'm curious which foods raised your blood sugar and made you lethargic.
  • mjf I'm sure you are trying to help, but I am almost 76 yrs old and it has taken me a long time to find a plan that not only works for me but also fits my lifestyle. After all these years, I know what works for me and I have no desire to eat any other way but low carb. Thank you.
  • TRISH my elliptical is big and I find I am having a hard time getting on and off it this time around. I hope that will improve with time. I will continue to use it as long as I can. I have to be careful I don't fall. I got it when the exercise psychologist at cardiac rehab recommended it 10 years ago. I was much more agile then. He said it uses more and different muscles than the treadmill. Of course he was very young! I am on my third treadmill. I went with that starting out because all doctors recommend walking and I figure no matter how old you get you can still walk, in most cases. I am lucky to have this separate room we are not using for all this equipment so it's a shame not to use it.

I have had 2 other exercise bikes but both were uncomfortable for me and I gave them away. Someone recommended the recumbent bike for my knees and it has helped. I got it at Goodwill for $20 or $25. I have gone to gyms in the past but always felt I was being judged.

Funny but my left foot pain is slight. Now it's my right ANKLE!! WTH??
  • Carol Sue I wish I could talk DH into making our room that was supposed to be an office into an exercise room. Maybe the ankle pain will go away as you exercise. Take it easy though not to cause any damage as we do have to be careful. I noticed when I first starting using the recumbent bike again that my right knee that never bothers me was hurting. However, about 5 minutes into it the pain went away and hasn't returned. I do squats but that seems to be harder on my knees than the bike however, I still do them because I think it is so important. I understand about being agile. DS said that she has a difficult time raising her left leg and I've noticed that I have some problems with lifting my legs to get in and out of car. I don't want to lose that ability so that is why I keep exercising. I just need to be more consistent with it. She thinks that has something to do with her falling.

Boy last night was one of those nights I could have binged if I had had any of my comfort foods around. DH and I both love chips and decided when we started low carbing not to bring them in the house. In fact, we threw out about half a big box of the individual packages. I told him it was a good thing because I would definitely be in them. He was missing them too. This is why we don't bring certain things in the house any more. I snacked on beef sticks and a few baby carrots but never could get satisfied. Even my BPC didn't help. Low carb actually got me through and even though I over did the protein and FBG was 134 this morning, my weigh was down .4 lb so I consider that very good. This new book on Dirty Lazy Keto is very helpful, because I feel like I actually came through yesterday successfully. It is a good feeling. As for exercise today will be walking at hospital and Walmart although the bike does help my back as well as knees so I just might do at least 10 minutes on it sometime today. I have a few more house cleaning that will also be exercise too.

I think I'm beginning to feel pressured to get last minutes things done before company arrives. Also it hasn't helped that DS is going through things. In fact, DH and I have to meet Daddy at CHF today since she doesn't feel comfortable driving yet. She is very nervous about falling again.

Busy day so hope everyone has a great day today.
  • Daddy's CHF appointment went very well. The nurse said that the new cardiologist lets the them make changes to his meds so she upped his fluid pill for a month and we go back next month. He was in a good mood which was nice to see him that way.

Although my FBG was 134 this morning, I am thrilled to say that my bs before dinner was 98. I don't know if I've ever had a 98 reading in years. I am so thrilled to see it. It is so nice that today seems to be a better eating day than yesterday. I sure am glad those days don't come around very often.

I'm not going to worry about being really strict with eating until after our company leaves Monday. I am hoping we can talk them out of taking DH and me out for breakfast so I can start on a 2 week LC Induction period. However, just in case they want us to go out, I told DH that Tuesday that I am going to start it. However, if they don't insist, I will begin it Monday. This new book I am reading even gives a lot of info on how to keep from having the keto flu. Therefore I want to get a good restart of LC with the 2 week induction.

Today has been a pretty good day.
  • Yesterday my eating window was bigger than usual, but I had konjac noodles with my 3rd meal, hope that will make up for it. I was 151 this am, so staying in range quite well.
Today I stayed on plan for lunch with my co-workers, one made chilli and we had two excellent salads, I made dessert, my low carb tiramisu. I am still full 6 hours later. Not sure I will eat tonight at all. Maybe I will fast until supper tomorrow.
I leave in the morning for our cottage, DH is there and put the water line in and has started up the water filter for the drinking water, so everything will be set when I arrive. We have tickets for a play and a concert nearby this weekend, so we will be happily busy, This is a long weekend here in Canada, so I will stay there until Sunday night.
I will likely check in but just briefly while there.
So I hope you all keep doing so well.
Carol: I know you are looking at blood glucose mainly, but at some point you will look at the scale and doing a body fat test now and then will help you know you are on the right track, that muscle is building up. That is a great way to help make your blood glucose get in line! good for you.

    have a great weekend friends.
  • I am happy to say that my weight is back in the range of side bar ticker at 215.8 and FBG back down to 129. My FB CAD group was talking the other day about how Rachel Heller fell into IF before they called it IF when she had to fast for a medical test she had planned to have early in the morning because she didn't think she could fast all day. They called her and told her they had to postpone the test till 4 that afternoon. She was surprised that she could fast till the test was done. She stopped on the way home and had a big dinner I believe at an Italian restaurant and even took a dessert home which she didn't eat. She expected to gain weight, but was surprised that she lost weight so she decided to try it another a day and another etc until she lost the weight. When she started losing weight she helped some of her friends do the same. When she met her DH who was a doctor who loved doing research, they created CAD to explain how and why the diet worked. Then came a way of doing the plan with 3 meals and snacks or OMAD, 2MAD or whatever worked for each individual.

I've decided that IF was the reason that CAD worked so well for her. I don't always follow the CAD way of eating but I really think if I lean toward it to some extent and keep true to shorter eating windows of IF that this will work better for me, because I believe doing IF in a way that it doesn't send a message to my body that I am dieting is key to success because it does away with guilt etc.

fatmad Have a tood weekend get away. You have kind of stabilized right now and that is good because your body is probably adjusting to all the weight you have lost.

Carol Sue Hope you are doing well today.

Going to beauty shop and need to go to 2 stores. I need to get some more cottage cheese and I need to go to Dollar Tree to get Daddy some new reading glasses. Not sure if I will go out to see him today or not. Don't know if I will see DS or not as she may not go to beauty shop today as she isn't sure she is ready to drive yet.

    Everybody have a great day.
  • Mad it's nice that you have a long holiday weekend to enjoy and I hope the weather cooperates. Ours is in a week or so but when you're retired it is always a weekend.

We went to the casino yesterday. DH lost all his money and I didn't gamble. I'm just tired of it . It is not like it used to be. I sat and read on my Kindle. DH says he is not going back but he has said that many times AND there are 2 other casinos nearby. LOL We sat in construction traffic for 1 hour. We barely made it to the rest stop for me. I was very uncomfortable. What a day. Glad it is over.
  • Carol Sue So sorry DH lost at the casino. I'm sure he will still want to go again though. If my DH had to sit in construction for an hour to go any where, he probably wouldn't go again. Patience isn't one of his virtues. LOL

I agree with you that when you are retired that everyday is like a weekend for us. Many times I have to stop to remember what today is and if I have to be some where are have an appointment. DS said she wondered if one of our problems is that we don't have to do anything. I'm hoping to change that.

Didn't go see Daddy. Not sure if his phone isn't working or he has turned it off again. By the time I got through at the grocery store it was almost noon and I wanted to come on home so I could have time before DH got up. DS didn't go this morning. We have decided that since we are older and retired that we don't have to get up so early so I talked our beautician and changed our appointments to 11 and 11:30 am on Fridays. She says it takes longer for her body to wake up and get going. I stay up with DH and am used to sleeping until almost 9 am and this way our beauty appointments will fit our new lifestyle. If I decided to go see Daddy on Friday's, I can go before I go to the beauty shop.

I have found a new favorite food... cottage cheese. I never could eat it on low fat diets because of the sodium, but I don't have to worry about that on low carb and I can have the full fat. I love it mixed with avocado and last night I cut up a few beef sticks and added it to the cottage cheese for a evening snack to end my 8 hr eating window. I didn't eat anything for breakfast before I left for the beauty shop because it was too early for brunch and when I got home it was too late for brunch so I will end up with a 18 to 19 hr fast by the time I eat this afternoon making today a 2MAD.

I said I was going to do a Atkins/lowcarb Induction starting Tuesday, but I think if I just continue eating healthy like I am and do it with IF that I don't have to change anything. I'm already OP even if we go out for breakfast with our company Monday. DH won't want another meal if we go out with them so we can just low carb snack the rest of the day. That is one thing I love about follow IF, it fits any plan.
  • Trish I have always loved cottage cheese but if i buy it all the time I get tired of it and have to stop for a while. To me, it doesn't taste the same as it did years ago. I have tried all the brands, large or small curd. It just doesn't taste the same....Probably my taste has changed. But I still like it. DH won't eat it but he has eaten it in things I've made but doesn't know it. The same with cream cheese. He says he will never eat it but he loves cheese cake.

I did my exercise today. I am proud that I'm following through. Years back I was told not to take nsaids because of my heart. I have been taking Tylenol Arthritis for my pain. Today I tried Motrin and it made a world of difference. I don't know what I'm going to do now. I want the relief I get from the Motrin.
  • Carol Sue Cottage cheese something that I probably won't eat everyday because I don't want to get tired of it either. I bought the HEB brand because I was there today and I hope it is as good as the Walmart brand. DH likes it and will eat it probably if I would dish it up for him but wouldn't go in to serve it up for himself.

I had a good conversation with my beautician who does low carb. I told her that I had learned of new name for the diet that she and I do "Dirty Lazy Keto" because we don't follow all the rules. I was telling her that this lady who lost all this weight on DLK said she never had BPC or fat bombs. I liked what my beautician said to that. She said the reason she doesn't drink BPC or eat fat bombs is because she would rather get her fat from a piece of sausage. She said she would rather just get it from her food. I think that is the way I feel about it too. Actually, I think the fat bombs and BPC just makes me hungry probably because I don't crave the sweets. The little bit of sweeteners in my coffee or drinks takes care of the sweet taste for me.

I don't know what to tell you about using the motrin. I understand about just wanting to be free of pain. Perhaps if you didn't take a lot of it you would be safe. I don't know that much about it. Have you researched the whys etc? Congratulations on staying with the exercise. I felt good about my exercise this week too. I've done the bike when home and then I've done a lot of walking as well so I feel like I've done well. I have also done very well with my eating too so I consider myself well on my way of a routine of eating healthy and exercising too.

I talked to DS and I hope she will get interested in the DLK book I'm reading. She thinks she can get it to read to her although it doesn't say it does. She would rather listen to her books than read them and says that it can be done sometime even if it isn't sold that way. I talked to Daddy and his grandson who got married Saturday brought his new wife and his little boy to see Daddy. He said someone else came and I think he must have brought his brother with them to see Daddy too.

DH and I have the house about ready for company Sunday. Tomorrow night I will sweep and mop the kitchen and run the dishwasher as well as one more load of clothes so that everything will be clean when they get here. We are having thunder storms tomorrow and it is going toward them so I can only hope it will play itself out before it reaches them. We are really getting a lot of rain this year. It is supposed to clear off Sunday and hit us again Tuesday and rain the rest of the week.
  • Trish I have heard from some other people in Texas about how much rain you are getting. We always get a lot of rain in the spring and it has been very true this year. I hope you enjoy the visit with your company.

Nsaids are said to cause heart attacks and strokes. Motrin was my choice for pain relief for years until I got heart disease and was told not to take it except once in a while. But Tylenol is bad for the liver so too much of that isn't good either. I think all OTC meds come with precautions and rx meds too. There are risks to whatever we put in our bodies, like the Turmeric that can't be taken with blood thinners. I might try it anyway. It helped before.

I looked up that book and I cannot get it free. I am satisfied with the amount of carbs I allow and am more interested in IF. I have a couple more free books to read on that subject but what is there no know? Just don't eat like Dr Fung says!
  • Biohacking myself to lose weight
Have just read a book called The Personalized Diet by an Israeli research team. They wanted to discover why no one diet works for everyone - they measured people's blood sugar and analyzed what they ate. Why measure blood sugar? When it spikes, the extra glucose in the blood gets turned to fat - this is when the pounds heap on.

The conclusion they reached was that certain foods will make certain people's blood sugar spike, some foods will have no effect. The surprise finding was the list of foods that causes an individual's spike is totally different from person to person - Dr Segal could have an ice cream and his blood sugar remained rock steady while rice sent his blood sugar through the roof.

I've bought myself a blood glucose meter, many strips and put myself through the pain of measurements before and after every meal. Have learned so far that all grains are bad for me - wheat (pasta, bread) oats, brown rice, while chicken and a chocolate milkshake for example keeps my blood sugar steady.
  • Carol Sue I think we just don't know enough about our meds as well as OTC stuff that we don't know enough about. I'm not sure the doctors know enough about them either.

I don't remember TX getting this much rain this time of the year. There is a road not far from us that floods and they have to close it and I notice that it is closed again as well as our lake is flooding over into the parks again this year. We used to say that we would be begging for rain in August. Strange how things change. Carol Sue I got the idea from something I heard Dr. Fung say in one of his books that he really didn't want to give people a diet to follow any more, but it did it any way. I have also found that most of the time that men can lose weight on some plans than women do. I remember reading that women didn't do as well on the extended fasts as men do. While I do try to stay within 16 hr fasting most of the time with an occasional 19 to 20 hr thrown in there, I read that women do better on a 12 to 14 hr fast. I have actually seen on some plans where some people do a 12 hr fast everyday and lose weight. It goes back to following what works for you.

The other day I shared on FB CAD that my favorite breakfast is avocado, eggs and bacon or small pork chop. Someone came back and said avocado is high in carbs to which I answered that avocado is a fat. She went to the trouble to look up how many carbs are in an avocado and it isn't on CM of CAD. I don't usually worry about the carbs in the avocado because I don't eat the whole avocado. Any way, I found out from the Moderator who told the lady that while it isn't on CM food list on CAD, that there are a lot of CAD Tweakers who tweak their plan to fit them. I told her that I was one of those. It is really funny to me that CADers will argue all day long that they are not a low carb diet until they disagree with something that is higher carb. LOL Not criticizing, but just interesting. I may just have to become a lurker on there because I do love some of the food ideas I see on there. I probably don't fit there any way because I like keto/IF and the moderator absolutely hates keto and doesn't want us even use the work says if you say the word that you will be removed from the group. She is the one who started that group so her rules reign. I love some of the keto recipes which fits fairly well in the CM which I consider low carb meals.

Louise Welcome to the thread and thanks for the heads up on the book. I just ordered it on my kindle because I have often wondered why others, especially diabetics, could eat things I couldn't and vice versa. In fact, I figure he has some info that I need to know and just might be helpful to me. As I have shared before, my doctor in SC just could not understand why oatmeal raises my blood sugar although he knew it was true. The sad thing is that oatmeal is one of my favorite foods that I don't use very often.

Company comes tomorrow. House is ready except that I will have to sweep and mop kitchen after dinner and I have a couple of loads of clothes to wash tonight. They hope to make it to Shrievport and spend the night and drive about 4 hrs in tomorrow.

fatmad I hope you are having good weather and enjoying your long weekend.
