Default Lean Proteins

Hi -

could someone tell me what constitutes a lean protein? I know it's chicken & fish but what else? Eggs? Cottage cheese? Wondering if there are any vegetarian options.

Thanks

There are a ton of lean meats. Here is a list of them on page two of the Filling Foods List:

Legumes, soy. I just had some hormel vegetarian chili last night that had soy protein in it. Pretty good.

A lean protein is any protein that isn't also heavy in fat.

Low fat dairy counts
Pork loin
Beef loin
Skinless chicken
Lean ground beef (93% or higher)
Ground turkey
Any turkey for that matter!
Beans and legumes
Some grains like oats and quinoa are high in protein

I like making my own hummus. It's cheap and slightly higher in protein than store purchased varieties. You can also make hummus burgers just by cooking it in fat-free cooking spray. I pat my hummus with the slightest bit of flour.

Thanks! A couple of questions from the list....

Do eggs count as a lean meat? Skim milk?

I'm really trying to pay attention to the good health guidelines this time around.

Thanks!

I think you might be overthinking this a little.

Just look at the nutritional value of what you want to eat. Is it a source of protein? Does it have low fat numbers? Then it's a lean protein.

Yes, eggs are consider a lean protein. So is skim milk.

I have another question to add... if I eat cottage cheese or yogurt or something, does that count as my dairy AND as the lean protein?

Also, are we limited to two lean proteins per day (seeing as how there are two check boxes for lean protein)?

Nothing is 'limited' - those are minimums that they want you to get in. I eat more than 2 servings of protein of whatever kind each day. They are trying to steer you away from living off carbs

I never thought about that for a veggie burger.

The lean proteins should total about 6 ounces, at least. Remember yogurt has to be 8 ounces and most are now 6. It doesn't usually have enough protein to be counted as a source of protein. 2 cups of cottage cheese is a dairy serving.

I lost all my weight on the original WW plan back in the early 70s. Kept it off until my husband died in May and then it started creeping up so I'm back on track now and getting it off before it becomes a serious problem.

That sounds beyond delish! I love legumes! That is one added bonus to WW, is learning to love new foods.

That's a lot of cottage cheese for one dairy serving! Also, protein packed @ 52 grams.
