Thursday, Feb. 10:

60 minutes elliptical, random resistance at 8 (which means it goes from 2 - 12), half backward
60 minutes Pilates, with the instructor focusing on our abs & glutes. Oh my God, those plie squats at the end, with us up on our toes

Friday, Feb. 11:

15:06 rowing on Concept 2, 2:21 500/m, 2,916 total meters, for 41 s/m, projected total of 6080
60 minutes weights
45 minutes arc trainer, hill interval, resistance at 9, trying to pick up the pace & go a bit faster

While on the arc trainer, I watched me some HGTV with the sound off. Nice couples being shown homes within their budget. I find myself wondering about the state of their marriage, based on the body language. Care nothing for which house they ultimately decide to buy.

I am having trouble getting to the gym this month and it is making me cranky! Dh leaves tomorrow for a trip and I usually do better when he's gone because I don't feel guilty going to the gym late (my gym is open 24 hours).

Feb. 10: NONE! Had to go to the mall after work to buy dd clothes for her party tonight and we got home late and I was utterly exhausted.

Feb. 11: decided to wake up at 4:15 to go to the gym so as not to miss another workout. Not sure if that was a wise idea as I'll be up past midnight tonight.

Saturday, Feb 12:

45 minute spin class
60 minute Pilates class

The gym's director, who also teaches my spin class, said that in this area, people who run gyms are noticing that the January rush of people with New Year's resolutions appears to have been delayed by the weekly storms we were having for six weeks straight. Usually, the "resolutionaries" disappear by Valentine's Day. This year, they just started signing up & reserving spaces in classes within the past few weeks, as soon as the weather relented. I've also noticed this in the competition for cardio equipment & the crowd in the free weight section right after working hours.

Lordy, I've totally forgotten about this thread. Thankfully, I'm not forgetting about actually exercising.

Saef, I don't think I come CLOSE to qualifying as a hard-core exerciser compared to your 2 hours/day, 7 days a week. WOW. I didn't realize there are people in maintenance who go at it so intensively. It is, to say the least, a forbidding proposition that to maintain in the long run I would need to do even more exercise than I do right now. No wonder I eat fewer daily calories and don't lose weight!

As for me, I made it to the gym on Monday, Wednesday and Thursday this week, and again this morning. Weekdays were 45 minutes each (weights twice and cardio once), and this morning's 75 minute double-header was 1/2 "metabolic training" (cardio with weights) and 1/2 straight weight training. Tomorrow I plan on a heavy leg day (weighted and body weight training) followed by rowing and elliptical.

Neurodoc, my life is about trade-offs. If I counted calories, I might be able to exercise less, but I don't & never have.

This may be part of my lifelong pattern of math avoidance.

Or it may be magical thinking on my part, i.e., if I make the right choices & stay active, I won't have to count, weigh & measure.

But that also means I have to settle for being about 140 lbs at 5'3". Lots of people here who are my height want to maintain at a lower weight & they are doing the math all the time.

It's a fact of life that I face daily on 3FC that there are people at my weight & height trying to lose 20 pounds or maybe even more.

I have pretty much made my peace with that & with my certainty that my abs will never pop.

I am, in general, an anxious, restless person, stressed out by my job & hard on myself, with a tendency toward depression, even physical seclusion, & going to the gym is one of the healthiest ways I know to keep myself tuned up & fairly sane.

Sunday, Feb. 13:

15:06 rowing on the Concept 2, 2:20 500/m, 2,979 total meters, at 41 s/m, for a projected total of 6,125 (I think the last number is accurate, but the display timed out while I was gargling down some water & I did not get that number down beforehand & so am relying on imperfect memory)
60 minutes weights
45 minute spin class

Spin class had a woman in it whom I've never seen in our gym before, with a very well-developed upper body & quads & the clothes of a pro: Sugoi biking shorts & shoes & top. She had the look of a triathlete. The athletic women in my gym tend to look like runners (or like trophy wives, but that's another post & that has to do with the demographic in our town). What I think I mean is, she had a strong-looking upper body & she looked muscular, not at all waifish, and she was not short. I felt very respectful of her. I kept wondering if this class worked her hard enough. (Sunday spin at 9 AM is known for being challenging.) I hope she shows up again.

Her presence somehow validates the spin class -- hey, it's hard enough for her -- and makes me feel okay about not being a runner (bad feet & knees) and not trying to be a trophy wife (no desire to return to eating disorder behavior).

Monday, Feb. 14, Valentine's Day:

45 minutes arc trainer, resistance at nine, hill intervals
60 minutes circuit training class

An unusually small class at the gym tonight because of the holiday. And me feeling guilty for not getting in a full hour of cardio beforehand. This has got to be magical thinking ("Only a full hour will protect me; 45 minutes is insufficient") because I am weirdly uneasy over those missing 15 minutes.

And while I was walking to the gym, I was passed continually by men carrying bouquets, wrapped up in paper, on their way home from work. The little greengrocer had white buckets crammed with roses & men lined up to buy them. All men, no women. By the time I left the gym & walked past the shop again, the roses were all sold out. And the Italian restaurant on the corner looked completely full; I kinda peered in the window as I walked by. I'm not envious. All the excitement makes me happy; it's that holiday feeling, a break from the usual routine. It's people trying to connect, even if they are using all the tropes they've been told to (nothing but roses will do; only a nice candle-lit restaurant will do), still, the effort is somehow wonderful to see.

Tuesday, Feb. 15:

15:07 rowing on the Concept 2, 2:22 for 500/m, 3,056 meters, 41 s/m, for a projected totalof 6,213
60 minutes weights. For the heck of it, hung from an overhead bar for a while. Just hung there, didn't try to chin up or anything. Amazed I could do this & feel fine. I always used to see movies in which people hung on to something at a great height for dear life, and think, "I'd be a goner in like a couple seconds flat." Apparently not anymore.

45 minute spin class in the evening

Feb. 13: 36 minutes running on treadmill-- was going to go longer but my stomach felt weird after I started running and I felt it was safer to go home just in case.

Feb. 14: 65 minutes boot camp. Yes, the gym was less crowded as was the class due to Valentine's Day (7:30 pm class) but it was more crowded than I expected. Great workout. I also went to the grocery store after to pick up a few things and was shocked to see so many men there buying flowers at 9 pm! Seriously? Have they not been home yet or did they go home, get in trouble for not bringing home flowers, and head back out?

Saef - brilliant! You just did it for the heck of it. You were just playing. That's so lovely to hear.
