A question about tea

  • Hello,
I have not started IP yet, but I am trying to get all of my ducks in a row. I recently received a shipment from Teavana and have been drinking three different types of teas.

I am going to list the ingredients from the different teas. I know if the items in the tea were consumed for example, the apple pieces, they would not be on program. Since the ingredients are being strained and being drank (drunk?) are they still against the rules?

My Morning Mate: Mate tea, red roobios tea, black tea, carob bits, cocoa kernels, orange peels, chocolate pieces, pistachio nuts, coriander seeds, almond pieces, marigold petals, hazlenut pieces, and macadamia pieces.

MateVana: Mate tea, cocoa kernels, red roobios tea, chocolate chips, almond pieces, marigold petals, and irish cream.

Lemon Lime Kampai: Apple bits, green roobios tea, lemongrass, grapes, candied guava pieces, apple slices, citrus peels, kiwi pieces, fig slices, spearamint, citric acid, lime pieces, and marigold petals.

I understand that if I choose to drink tea while on IP, I have to increase my water intake even more. Just as a note: The "Mate" teas contain as much caffeine as a cup of coffee, whereas the Lemon Lime tea does not contain caffeine.
  • Herbal teas are allowed on IP. All the teas you have listed have non-herbal ingredients in them.
  • Guess I probably better check mine. I using a Keurig single serve machine with English Breakfast Tea. Only ingredient is natural black tea. When I asked my coach she just said tea was fine including ice tea.

I'm just on day 3 so don't want to screw up this early.
  • I love Teavana

If that's the only ingredient, you're fine!
  • Herbal teas can often include dried fruits as flavorings - they are FINE on phase 1 as there really aren't any carbs that carry over into the tea water.

You ONLY need to add extra water to your daily intake if your tea has caffeine. Caffeine is a diuretic (makes the body eliminate water) so you need to offset your caffeine intake with water to prevent accidental dehydration.
  • Thanks for all of the info! It looks like I will have to adjust my tea intake as I start with IP.
