I enjoy the show as well, but I found out they are rather fake. I work with a woman who was on the show. She was told to make up an event (in her case, a cruise, as a target event) and her "before" meals were exaggerated. That was for LAST 10 POUNDS though, some of the X-Weighted people appear to be more realistic in their "before" habits.
I still enjoy it though. And I still want Paul Plakas.
I try and catch the BBC show You Are What You Eat. I haven't watched too many of the shows. I am watching Ruby but her voice is starting to be a bit cloying.

I may be a cynic, but I'm not surprised. A friend of mine works on TV shows--reality TV shows mostly. I really found it interesting how much they play things up to make it more...shocking, dramatic, etc. And a co-worker was on a home-reno type show and he told us how much is "fake", like prompted ot . They ask, "Do you think your wife bit off more than she can chew?" He says, "Yeah, maybe." They say, "Um, could you repeat it back? We need the sound bite." He says, "Yeah, I think my wife bit off more than she can chew." And there was a part on the show where they were told how "structurally unsound" their home was, and escorted out by the reno expert. Um, no, it was totally exaggerated--their home was safe.
Anyway, as heartbreaking as it is to hear that TV lies to us *sniff, sniff* I'm not surprised to hear it about Last 10 Pounds/ Bulging Brides. That whole thing with "THIS is what you will look like if you gain 4 pounds a year for 10 years...!!!" followed by a horrible distorted picture of the person 40 pounds heavier... that really bugs me. For some people, it really plays on their insecurities, and sometimes it's just cruel. So yeah--they already have so many other things that are obviously for shock value or obviously exaggerated...I'm not surprised.
I do like You Are What You Eat though. Besides the emphasis on healthy eating and exercise, she says "Poo" like 15 times every episode. And she's actually talking about poo!
So deal then, Sacha: You can have Paul, I'll take Tommy.
I met Paul from Xweighted last week & it was lots of fun.
He was doing a 3 hour bootcamp thing in Richmond Hill & I just had to go.
So glad I did - if he comes close to you, you should make the effort & go.
Totally worth it!
I've been looking for more weight loss shows to watch while I'm on my Gazelle (for motivation), and I recently discovered Last 10 Pounds and Bulging Brides. Ruby is great...I hope you enjoy it up there in Canada!
OMG, I am nuts about weight loss shows....here's a bunch of my faves....
Ruby (I absolutely love this show and can't wait for season 2)
Biggest Loser(wish I could go on but they don't accept Canadians)
Supersize vs superskinny
X-weighted
Taking it off(although I am tired of all the re-runs now)
X-weighted rocks, especially since the people featured are regular people who don't have assistance provided to them by the show. They are just doing their best, and not all of them meet their goals. And Paul sure speaks his mind! I laugh alot when I watch the show.
I think what bugs me about the Tommy the trainer shows (Last 10 pounds, Bulging Brides) is when he does the ugly distorted picture of the participants if they gained weight. Almost ALL of them have the ugly weight that is LOWER than my current weight! So how ugly must I be if their worst nightmare is a place I hope to get to some day!!!! I can't stand it for that reason, and refuse absolutely to watch Tommy because of this. If he just eliminated that part of the show, I'd watch. But to have the participants recoil in horror and say how GROSS and how DISGUSTING they look at a weight I one day hope to get to just makes me feel like crap!!!
Kira
You have the exact same guilty pleasure shows I do!
The XWeighted episode you talked about was actually filmed in the city I live in (Kelowna)! I often drive the roads she did the 50km on, and oh man I can't imagine doing that myself! Maybe I'll make it my goal one day...
I love Bulging Brides and Last 10 lbs. For one, Tommy is delicious to look at haha. I also watch since it's filmed in Vancouver, again close to where I live, so I like looking at the scenery on the show.
I get a lot of good tips from both shows and actually listen to what the trainers say..
I like to watch Biggest Loser too....
I think I have become addicted to weight loss shows
I also like the shows on TLC about the obesity problem. They had this story about this guy that lost 700 pounds with Gene Simmons and then within 7 years he gained 800 pounds.
Umm....I think you meant Richard Simmons, and not the guitarist from KISS.....ROFL!!
Yup! I am with you guys...I love these shows. I don't watch any of them religiously, but I am a fan of X-Weighted, Supersize vs. Superskinny, The Biggest Loser, Taking it Off, and You Are What You Eat. I also like the show How to Look Good Naked because it has nothing to do with weight loss but the people always seem to feel so much more confident at the end and it makes me happy
It's funny though...Weight loss shows and the Food Network are my two favs. Oy, the internal conflict reigns.
