My best friend just broke up with her boyfriend, so I made a "cheer up, it's summer!" CD. I wanted everything to be happy - upbeat, uptempo and celebrate summer! My friend likes top 40 stuff, isn't wild about oldies or electronica or anything "too alternative," but I thought it turned out so well, I had to share! (I made a copy for me too).

You guys are hilarious - I made the CD for a FRIEND who does not LIKE oldies. I have to admit, I LOVE the mix mainly because it's mostly all fresh and new music for me. I love the Beach Boys, I like Buffet, I like "Here Comes the Sun" by the Beatles, I like Mungo & Jerry's Summertime, I like "Hot Fun in the Summertime" - but you know, I have heard those songs 1000s of times and I'm kinda tired of them. Honestly, if there was a Buffet song or a Beach Boys song on that mix, I would FF over it, like I FF over Katrina and the Waves "Walking on Sunshine" - it's just a big /yawn. (plus, I wanted the title to include the words: summer, sun or hot, and it HAD to be upbeat and uptempo to cheer up my friend - I can't think of any well-known Buffet songs off the top of my head that meet this criteria).

ACK! You put a hurt'n on my heart, Miz Glory!
Buffett has very few "well known" songs. He doesn't get loads of radio play & he doesn't get Top 40 #1's. Buffett is an "enterprise" unto himself. His music transcends all ages. Most people know Margaritaville, Come Monday, Cheeseburger in Paradise... and his most recent well known is with Alan Jackson "It's 5:00 Somewhere".
But Buffett has SO MANY "summer" songs... songs about lazying at the beach... drinking a fruity tall one... napping in the sun... good friends, good music, good times... he is all about "Boats/Beaches/Bars/Ballads" (a 4-cd collector's set) .... and can you TELL I'm a "parrothead"???
I recently bought an IPOD to load all my Buffett songs, specifically to take to the beach & listen out by the pool. I'm in happy land.
(BTW, your CD for your friend is really a good one! - I've made several like that for myself & friends & family!)
As I said, I made it for a friend and she's not into oldies music.
What? The BEACH BOYS...oldies? I am so confused!
The Beach Boys were/and still are very popular here in southern California...at least in my house they are. Why, I grew up with them on the radio, then records....then 4 track....then 8 track....then cassettes! I loved hearing them in the late 60's when I was in middle school...we called it junior high then...and all the way up until I graduated in 1972! I took my "future" first wife to their reunion tour kick-off at Anaheim Stadium in 1975! Oldies?...no GLORY I think you might be mistaken....the oldies are the groups my parents listened to...Jerry Lee Lewis...Chubby Checker...Little Richard....Chuck Berry...those guys arethe oldies.

I wondered if you knew those were oldies. I did add All summer long and Fun Fun Fun to the playlist I borrowerd from Glory. Beachpatrol, can you recommend a couple of Jimmy Buffet titles? I just now his really common ones that you listed, but would like to add something different.
I played my "Summer" playlist while exercising this morning. The songs were almost all new to me and were very upbeat.
Of course I know who the oldies are TAMMY! Why goodness, just 37 years ago I saw Neil Diamond for the first time in concert....have seen him several times....and I am going to see him again in San Diego in October...I suppose one day he will be an oldie...one day....
