Cross Lanes pair killed walking along I-64

A husband and wife from Cross Lanes were killed early Wednesday while walking next to the westbound lanes of Interstate 64, police said.

About 2:10 a.m., Kent Brewer, 44, and Bethana Brewer, 40, of Walls Drive, were walking on the shoulder of the interstate in western Kanawha County, Kanawha County Sheriff’s Department dispatchers said. Their white Ford Escort had apparently run out of gas.

At the same time, Sarah Elizabeth Preece, 23, of Louisa, Ky., was driving west in a rented 2007 Ford Focus when she pulled over to make a call on her cell phone.

She did not see the couple as she pulled off the road and struck them about three-quarters of a mile east of the Cross Lanes exit, one dispatcher said.

The Brewers’ car was found a short distance from where they were struck.

No charges have been filed, but deputies are reconstructing the wreck as part of their investigation. Preece was not injured.

I thought this was during the day since they said it happened that morning. But I guess it was dark out. Still. You got headlight. You can't see people where you're driving? And if you're pulling off the road, you SHOULD be slowing down. Not barreling along at 70 mph gunning for victims.

I think calling them too stupid to get a license lets them off too easily. They just don't care about other people. It has nothing to do with being so dumb they don't realize that parking outside of the lines or darting in and out of traffic might inconvenience someone. It is just that they don't think about the fact that things they do affect others, because they think only of themselves. It never occurs to them that there are other people in the world

AMEN!!!! They do it when there's construction or an accident like they're special and I should let them back in after they've cut past 50 cars. What if there were police or an ambulence trying to get through? Doing jerk things like that could leave someone injured or cause DEATH!

I once had the pleasure of seeing an undercover cop car pull over a woman who was driving in the breakdown lane when there was an accident up ahead. I hope that woman got a big ticket. My pleasure at seeing that still keeps me happy.

I once had the pleasure of helping a semi stop a guy from traffic hopping and driving the breakdown lane during a jamup from an accident. But he finally got around both of us and went flying up the breakdown lane...just to slam on his brakes and narrowly avoid slamming into the rearend of the cop car parked there. LOL I hope the bum went to jail.
