Did my second 10K last night, the Old Mutual 10K Road Race in Pinelands, Cape town. My time was 01:07:09, and my previous 10K (two Sundays prior) was 01:11:07. Extremely happy with my nearly 4 minute improvement in 2 and a half weeks

defenestrator - I'm blogging about the exact same goal, only I'm trying to run it in 3:35 - 3:40. It seems really ambitious and I'm not really telling anyone in real life for fear they think I'm crazy. Have you run a marathon before? What was your half marathon time like?

Deva – Congrats on your half mary!! You are a rocking it chick!!
Gymrat05 - I ran the Disney World Mary Last year!!! It was awesome!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Even though my knee went A-wall at mile 15 I finished anyway… and I finished it RUNNING (well I wasn’t walking; it may have been a shuffle) it took me 6:20 minutes. The scenery was great and the characters and the excitement! Oh jeez…I cant even explain how I felt when I when finished.
Alenna – WOW! You did awesome! It sounds like a fun race and what a great time. Congratulations
Defenestrator – That is the one I did last year…It was really a great race. That medal you got when crossed into Canada sound COOL…I am going to look that one up. Collecting medals in different cities is like my “thing”…not for show but just cool to me. I feel like I am running the country one race at a time. 5 miles is great, no matter how long it took…WTG!

I ran 3-1/2 last night and my pace is improving so much!!! I am flying home tonight and returning Sunday so I probably won’t get very much running in over the weekend. I guess I could use the rest though…my legs could anyway. I got in 9 miles over Tuesday and Wednesday and two lifting sessions.

gymrat05 -- I'm slow. My half-marathon time is 2:32. I think I can get that down to about 2:00 by early spring. I think if I were able to get it down to 1:45 I would consider it worth it to try and train for a Boston qualifying time over the summer and otherwise I might back off and just go a little easier.

I loved your blog! I haven't run a marathon before. I'm a pretty new runner. I was a very competitive swimmer when I was young, but I'm 42 now.

Thanks for the words of support everyone!! Now that my marathon is over for this year, I feel kind of lost as to what to do on the weekends. It's a very odd empty feeling. Gotta watch that I don't binge out too much and re-start my running, after taking a week-or-so break.

gymrat05 - this was my 7th marathon and 4th Marine Corps Marathon. When I was in my 30s I ran three of them in the 4:30 range; but now I'm in my 50s, it's been a struggle to keep my pace up. I think it's a peri-menopause thing. It's been so hard to lose weight, even with all the running I do. The MCM is a great race, but VERY crowded. It takes about a half an hour for all the people to just get across the start line.

defenestrator - this one will definitely be remembered because of Hurricane Sandy. I read that a lot of people from out-of-town got stuck in DC because their flights were cancelled.

CakeBatter - thanks and good luck on your training for the Disney World Princess!

devadiva - congrats on your half mary! You time is great - wish I could run that pace.

CakeBatter - That sounds amazing. I would totally take my time on that one. It's way more about getting the experienced.

defenestrator - Thank you! That's so fun. I need to drop some weight and get my speed up and then I'll better be able to gauge if it's even a possibility. But for now, it's fun having a big goal!

Alenna - Yeah, I've heard it's a great race for first timers but very crowded. I guess running in a hurricane makes it a little difficult too. Lol.

Hello all, just popping in to ask a quick question:

Is it alright to run every day if you're just starting out? I have an ease into 5k app on my phone and after my first workout the other day there was a tip that said to leave at least one day for rest in between runs. Problem is, I'm amped to go and do it again today! Does this mean just a day of no running? Is it still alright to do weights or cardio at the gym? Please & Thanks.

I would do something else besides running initially. It's pretty hard on the body so you don't want to give yourself an injury when you're just starting out. Give your tendons and ligaments at least 2-4 weeks to strengthen before you start adding in extra days of running, even if you feel really good.

Thanks for the advice gymrat!

Would it be alright to use the elliptical / bike on the days I don't run, or do those work those same muscles?

2Dy2MrwAlwys - you should be fine to do either. They're not high impact.

Ran 8k this morning, slowly, and I'm going to run another 3-5k this afternoon. I'm running with friends this afternoon, so maybe I'll go a little bit faster, but this morning was pretty putzy.

Didn't help that the dog was not observing the end of daylight savings time.

I haven't run since Friday - did about 4.25 miles. This weekend has been crazy. I had a test yesterday afternoon (1-5pm) and a test tomorrow night. This isn't conducive to workouts!

I completed my half marathon today! I don't know my official time yet, but I think it was around 2:30; I'll update when the results are posted online. It was amazing, so empowering, and I'm ready to sign up for my next one (looking at The Twin Lights Half in Gloucester/Rockport, MA in May 2013).

Each of my 6 kids chose a song for my playlist and I thought of them as I listened to their song choice. The made poster boards for me and my husband hung them up miles 7-13. It was very encouraging to have their support through this whole journey, and I cried ugly tears of joy as I crossed that finish line and had them all crowd around for hugs.

It was my first, but it's definitely not my last!

Congrats to everyone for all their races and miles this week. Rock on, runners!
