Walking the Track at my Gym

  • At my gym you have to walk around the track to get to certain equipment. On some days you're supposed to walk clockwise and on other days you're supposed to walk counter clockwise. Well typically I have just gotten off the elliptical when I need to go on the track to get to my next machine and because I'm dyslexic and a bit out of sorts from exercising I never know which way to go. For the last couple of years I've been telling them they need to put an arrow up to show which way to go, I noticed they finally put an arrow up yesterday.

I cant tell you how many times I've walked on that track in the wrong direction, I wouldn't want to gym police to get me.
  • That sounds very confusing! Why do they have to change the direction?? I would have been asking for an arrow too.
  • They say they do it to try to keep things interesting while making things orderly at the same time. Keeps people from going 2 different directions makes sense to me but I wish they'd just keep it in a clockwise direction all the time.

Sometimes, I go the wrong way on purpose. Yeah, I'm a rebel. lol

Especially on smaller ovals, runners put a lot more stress on the 'inside' leg, and if the track is banked, even more so. It makes sense to change directions.
  • Alternating direction is typical everywhere. I find it funny, too!
  • At my gym there's a section of track that you have to walk on to get from one section to another that's about 15 feet long. I'll just walk that section in whichever way I'm going, even if it's the "wrong" direction for the day. I just make sure there's no one who is actually using the track that I'll be in the way of before I step on. Hope the gym police don't ticket me!!
