Default Metabolic Syndrome

I was at the dr this afternoon and he told me I have metabolic syndrome and I should watch what the heck he was talking about. I tried to ask questions and was pretty much rushed out the door. My question is what do I do now?
What type of diet do I need to follow and how the heck do I start? Diabetes runs in my family and I sure don't want to be the next one with it. I want to prevent diabetes and get rid of metabolic syndrome. Could you give me some tips? Thanks. Deb

There's still some disagreement over the "best" diet for metabolic syndrome, but low GI plans ("good carb") like South Beach and lower carb diets seem to be gaining favor. My doctor recommended low (but not too low) carb dieting - but he admitted he didn't know how low was too low, so I just experimented and decided on a lower carb exchange plan (I slightly modified the low carb exchange plan I found on the hillbilly housewife website).

Bad doctor! Could you call the office and see if you can talk to a nurse or nurse practitioner about this? I find they frequently have more info than the doctors. There might also be a dietitian available.
