Smile Clemmy's Ice Cream -- opinions?

New to the boards but followed Atkins ages ago. Need a refresher, especially since the WOE has updated since I last tried it.

I went searching for sugar-free options for ice cream. I love the whipped cream and jello thing, but it was getting a bit old for dessert. I found Clemmy's Ice Cream, made in Southern California -- like me!

Calories 200
Cal from fat 140
Total Fat 16g
Total Carbs 19g
Dietary Fiber 3g

Any thoughts? It's also gluten free and 99.7% lactose free.

19 carbs?? uh..i dont think so..Not on a low carb program..even if you take away the dietary fibre from the carb count thats still 16 carbs..yes..some of its from the milk obviously..but not all of it..soundsl ike it would throw you right out of ketosis...i would stay away from it.

If you're doing Atkins, this would be an Atkins no-no.
You could make your own low carb, Atkins Induction friendly ice cream

Still Going Strong On Atkins Since April 13, 2004

The "polyols" are sugar alcohols. There's some disagreement over whether or not they too (or some of them) can be subtracted from total carbs. My understanding is that xylitol is the least digestible of the bunch (so the one that most likely you can subtract), and that at most 1g out of every 4 would have to be counted (supposedly calories as well). So out of 14g of xylitol, only 4 at most would "count."

There's also some evidence that some people may be able to digest some sugar alcohols to a greater degree than others (and apparently it's on a case-by-case basis. So you'd have to somehow know which ones your body can digest and which ones they can't. I may be able to digest one that you can't and vice versa).

That's why many people to be on the safe side, don't subtact sugar alcohols from their total carb count. Other people do subtract them, and still other people count a percentage of them.

Another thing to remember about the polyols, they tend to have a laxative effect. Personally, I've wondered whether the laxative effect is confirmation that you're body isn't able to digest them, but I haven't found anything to support or refute that.

I control carbs and calories indirectly through an exchange plan (each food/portion within an exchange group contains roughly the same number of calories and carbs), so it's not as much of an issue for me, but I am considering xylitol as a low-carb sweetener.

Thanks for all the replies, folks! I can see why 3FC is such a great community.

Kaplods, I definitely suffer from the laxative effect after eating the ice cream, but I also haven't seen the scale go up (in fact, it's gone down!). I attributed that to water loss, so I've been super aware of my hydration levels during the day. I read some of the research on the sugar alcohols myself -- and I remember finding sugar-free candy when I did Atkins before. I honestly can't remember what my reaction was before because I was hip deep in my weight loss, so all my bodily functions were a little "off". Ah, the joys of a low-carb lifestyle!

JerseyGyrl, thanks for the recipe -- I'll have to try this one!
