Default Narcolepsy and Apnea

I was recently diagnosed with narcolepsy and apnea. While the narcolepsy is my primary problem and affects me in all facets of life, the apnea is also a issue that needs to be addressed. One way that the narcolepsy affects the apnea is REM sleep. My doctor says that narcoleptics tend to have a lot of REM sleep- I had a ton of it according to my sleep study. But my AHI or apnea indcidents were also were then double during my REM sleep than what they were otherwise. My apnea is moderate. It is going to be addressed before my narcolepsy is because of the complecations assosciated with it. If I lose enough weight (and I am also starting allergy shots soon) that would really help my apnea.

But I think part of the problem for me is that I feel it is hard to exercise and be disciplined and what not when I am tired or don't feel well. And I am always tired! I am looking for info on lap band surgeons in my area and I also am thinking of joining weight watchers or something like that for more accountability. I do try and think about food- but not all the time. I also manage to take the dog on a short walk most days if nothing else.

Any suggestions?

thats a rough deal. Let me point you to www.talkaboutsleep.com they have narcolepsy and apnea forums. I remember someone else that had both. I just have rem apnea, I regained my life with cpap. You have to commit to it, but after you get it figured out its not bad. I named my cpap tom cruise cause I like sleeping with tom everynight. LOL

I have read some gastric bypass research that apnea was completely cured in morbidly obese with weight loss.

I hope all your treatment goes well.

PS: I started losing wt for the first time once I got my apnea treated, after gaining 45lbs in 2 years.
