TO COUNT OR NOT TO COUNT?? Who counts the caloires in there FRESH fruits and veggies?? And if so where do you find the information for the calories in them? Also do you think it is ok not to count the calories in them and leave them as a FREE FOOD if your doing calorie counting??
Thanks

I count fruits and some veggies. Some veggies are so calorically low, that I don't really count them (spinach leaves - 1 cup for 7 calories!)

Yep, I count them - some fruits are rather higher than you would suspect as are some veggies just like some are so minimal it IS hardly worth it.

Try www.fitday.com.au for a good food database.

I count them also. Fitday includes calorie count for fresh fruits and veggies. For most veggies, I don't measure or weigh, I just "eye" it (even though I'm still getting the hang of guessing measurements). I do feel like some of them are such freebies, that if I eye it a little over, I'm still okay.

I also count them. I count everything.

That said, I would probably listen to your doctor and follow the plan that he has established for you. My guess is that his motive is to instill a lifestyle change of greatly increasing your intake of fresh fruits and veggies by making them a free food. Very likely, his "real" target calorie goal that he has established for you is a bit higher than the 1500 number he gave you. He is probably figuring 200-400 or more in uncounted fruits and vegetables.

What I would do is still put all your daily information into a program such as Fitday as others have suggested. You can subtract your fruits and vegetables from the overall number to get the number you need for your doctor's plan.

Well my opinion is of limited value since I don't write things down or technically count calories, although of course I am very aware of them and watch what I eat. But I do have a "eat all you want" of fruits and veggies "rule" and find that it works very well for me. I AM cautious about not pigging out on stuff that is high in calories, but I also DO find that my body processes natural foods much easier than "junk" -- even supposedly nutritious "diet" junk like diet meals, etc.

I'm a little amazed that you would ask whether to listen to your doctor or to strangers online. I vote for listening to your doctor! My doctor, for example, told me NOT to go under 1800 calories and I would lose just as much weight as on a much lower calorie "diet" -- I am listening to her and doing what she said... and it is working and I don't feel deprived in the slightest.

Calories are calories, regardless of where they come from.

I count everything.

Some veggies are high in calories as well as some fruits can be very high in calories. I used to eat a lot of fruit and not much else for a while and I didn't lose any weight but that wasn't very balanced

I count calories in fruits, but its very estimated. I don't count veggies unless its something starchy like a potato Carrots, raddishes, celery, cucumber...not a chance! That's just me...

I figure the probability of me overeating on veggies is next to nil and 150 times better than eating anything else with little nutritional value when unplanned.

Exactly! I am not convinced anyone ever got fat from eating too many veggies.
