Default Evening Primrose

Hi all,

I'm sort of worried about something.

A few days ago, I started taking evening primrose softgels. (1 softgel a day, of 1,000 mg.)

Since then, my stomach has been all messed up, I've had terrible heartburn, and I get very nauseus unless I eat the blandest of food. I've also lost a pound in the last 3 days.

I don't know if I'm allergic to it, or it's something unrelated that just happens to be a time coincidence. I'm on the south beach diet, and have been for about six months, so at this point, I'm very aware of my nutriition/health -- so I know it's nothing I'm eating. I do take green tea pills too - but those I've been taking a while, and never had a problem with. Maybe it's some sort of interaction between the two?

Has anyone else had any weird side effects from these vitamins?

I would suggest stop taking it, though you probably have already done that. Evening Primrose isn't a vitamin or something we need, it's just a supplement marketed with a long list of claims which probably have not even been proven. Since the supplement industry is not regulated, they can tell you virtually anything they want, and they don't have to prove it.

Berkeley Wellness (University of CA) published an informative article on Evening Primrose that might be helpful. According to them, an upset stomach can be a side effect, though they say it's not dangerous.

This is an interesting thread for me.. I have recently had a screening test for breast cancer due to some persistent breast pain - at some times waking me from my sleep! I went to the breast cancer clinic in my city and the clinic have recommended a mega dose of evening primrose oil to help with the pain as the daignostic test came back clear for cancer... hmmm very interesting. I will take them and see how I go.

perhaps eliminating them from your diet and seeing how you fare and adding them back in for a few days to see if the problem re occurs.. it could potentially be a bad mix with the green tea supplement as well. I hope it all gets sorted out soon
