100 lb. Club - Lump in my breast. Yes men do get them too.

I had an physical yesterday and the doctor found a lump in my breast. It's been kind of painful which is good because she said cancer most of the time does not cause painful lumps. So tomorrow I go and have a mammogram and ultrasound to see what's up. I would appreciate your prayer and positive thoughts.

On a good note she is going to send me to have an MRI for my back and hopefully be able to give me some treatments for some of the pain I am having.

The very best of wishes and luck for tomorrow, Howie; that all goes well with the mammogram and that the lump is just a minor irritation of some sort that can be taken care of easily. Good news about the MRI ~ it'll be great if they can finally find something to help with the back pain (I know that's been bothering you for awhile). :crossed:

Do let us know how everything went and tell Kimberley to give you a huge hug big enough to be from all of us! :grouphug:

I have heard that pain is a GOOD thing when it comes to a lump like that - so that's a positive thing - perhaps a cyst. Still scary to hear "lump" - I know, BTDT. Good luck - I have faith that all will be well. :grouphug:

They did the mammogram, then had the radiologist read it. They had a cancellation in ultrasound at 3pm, so they went ahead and had him get one of those (the doctor had wanted both done). The radiology tech kept saying, "looks like connective tissue". When she finished, she said, "Well, I didn't see anything, but I didn't say that."

All smiles here! :D

I'm sure I'm a bit late here but I just did a search for breast lump and it appears as though I am going through the same thing Howie just did. I have had this lump for a while but last Friday when I did the ultrasound they said they didn't see anything. I haven't heard back from the doctor yet, but called the same day nervous that with it's size they couldn't find it. One of the nurses said it could be a fibrous cyst, or something similar. When we looked it up it seems to be another one of those things, like PCOS, that I just have to lose weight and exercise to make it go away. I swear, that's the answer for every medical problem I seem to have right now. It's a bit annoying. ;) Anyway, glad to hear every thing went well for you two. Glad to see that it's not just me. :D

I actually haven't gotten any results back from mine yet. The nurse told me over the phone the same day I got the tests done because I was so upset that as large as it is they said they couldn't find anything, at the hospital. My doctor hasn't called me yet about the test and it's been more than a week now. I'm still worried about it, but I hope it is nothing.

No news yet. I called the doctor on Monday and was like, it's been more than a week, and I'd like to know what's going on and the nurse I spoke with said it was on her desk and she'd call me the following day. That was two days ago! I'm still waiting for a reply. I did get a letter from the hospital and they said that the US came out normal, but that I should wait to hear from my doctor to find out if they'd like more tests. :S I'm sure it's nothing but another one of those things that I have to lose weight, exercise, eat right and it'll all be better. But thanks for asking. :D

No problem, I've had trouble getting back to it too. I finally did something myself about the lump I found. It's been three weeks since the ultra sound and I have still not heard back from my gynocologist. I decided to see what another doctor could do for me. I got the results from the hospital and took them to another doctor I had seen a couple of times, to see if I wanted him for a family practitioner. He felt for it and looked over the results. Said they didn't spot anything with the US but that he's going to schedule me with a surgeon in a couple of weeks to see if they want to A) keep an eye on it, B) insert a needle and see if they can withdraw any fluid to deflate it, or C) numb me up, and remove it surgically.

I hadn't told anyone but an aunt who found out last year that she had breast cancer. I finally gave in and told my mom yesterday and she about had a heart attack. Says she wants to go with me to see the surgeon. I guess, until then, I have no more news.

The doctor did say, however, that being as the lump was not found in the US that it is a good sign and something that could be dealt with by less caffeine and more vitamin E. Called it a possible fibrocystic tumor. My mom says she thinks she gets them too, so it's another wonderful hereditary thing that I got from mom, like the PCOS. I hope like crazy that my daughter doesn't get this stuff too.

Thanks for asking again, Kimberly.

Gardenwife
10-02-2005, 03:24 AM
Oh, man, Artgirl! (((hugs))) Good for you getting a new doctor.

If I were you, I'd call the Illinois Department of Professional Regulation and tell them how this first doctor dropped the ball. At the least, they might send a letter notifying him/her that there's been a complaint to them. They need to know that kind of thing -- there's just no excuse for that! See http://www.patientrights.com/links/links9.htm for the department's contact info.

Gosh Artgirl - I'm sorry to hear about all the trouble you've been having!

I wanted to pass on to you that my mom has gone through this a couple of times now. She has found a lump and had to have a biopsy - everything has been fine all three times. She was told that she has very fibrous breasts. She has to be checked every 6 months and have a mammogram just to keep on top of things and they are extra vigiliant if they think something needs to be checked further - since having fibrous breasts can mask a real lump. But, that sounds like what might be happening with you. Hopefully it turns out to be nothing! ((HUGS))

Thank you both for your advice and concerns. I hope that next week they will give me some more information on what exactly it is and how to prevent it from recurring or whatever. I'll keep everyone posted. :D

ArtGirl

Well, it looks like it was a fibrous tissue mass after all. The surgeon wants to see me back in five to six weeks to have another look. In the meantime, doctor number two suggested cutting back on caffeine. I've been drinking more hot tea and water lately. I guess we'll see if it works.

I've been thinking of reporting the gyno (still hasn't called back) about her neglecting the situation. Though it turned out to be nothing it was still a scary situation and it could have been something bad. The appointment for the US was on Sept. 9, tis now Oct. 21 and still no return call about the results. I've been told by a nurse that it's best to write her office to say I don't want her services anymore and who to redirect my files to. I'm still so disappointed. She was the only doctor I'd come across that even knows what PCOS is. For that reason alone, I'm sad to see her go.

Gardenwife
10-21-2005, 04:46 PM
Great to hear they're thinking more fibrous tissue than threat! About the caffeine - watch the tea consumption, too. While tea generally contains less caffeine than coffee, the amount can vary by the type of tea brewed and how strong you brew it.

You *definitely* need to report the gyno. Seriously, for her to still not have called you is terrible. If nothing else, she needs to know she can't just let patients fall through the cracks like that. They're people with fears and they trust her to do what's right by them. Even if she's crazy-busy and it was a support staff snafu, she needs to know so others don't experience what you did.

Thanks again for the support and all. I suppose you are right, Kimberly. I went back to the post with the disciplinary numbers and tried to call. I suppose they are closed on weekends too. ;) Well, I am going to report her. It's been nearly two months and I still have not heard anything. I'm about in need of a refill on the pill for the PCOS thing so I suppose I need to have things switched over to the new doctor soon.
I asked someone about how to do that, hoping it only took a phone call, but was told I have to write some official letter stating that I want my information transfered to another doctor. That sucks! Oh well, I suppose it would be good timing since we just moved. I can get the new address to the new doctor and be done with the negligent one.
Thanks again for your advice and support. It means so much to me to know that people care, and that I'm not alone. :D
