Chicks up for a Challenge - Lazyman Marathon - August Challenge

A Lazyman Marathon is a full marathon (26.2 miles/42.2 km) but instead of taking a few hours you have a whole month to complete it. You can walk, run, skip, or jump the distance but you must use you feet. Biking doesn't count however. You may break up the total distance anyway you want: walk a mile every day for 26 of the days, run a couple miles every few days, cram the last week, however you want to do it. And feel free to go over if you find this to be easier than expected.

The challenge will run from August 1 through August 31. If you're interested post on here and I will add your name to the list. Each time you log a distance I will try to update your total.

When you reach 25% (~6.5mi) of your goal I will highlight you in Red
When you reach 50% (~13mi) of your goal I will highlight you in Orange
When you reach 75% (~19.6) of your goal I will highlight you in Yellow
When you reach complete your goal I will highlight you in Green
With how quickly some of you are stacking on miles I will highlight you in Blue for everything over a marathon.

Only Believe, maybe you'd like to try out http://www.mapmyrun.com/. I use it to track my running, walking and all other workouts. You can pre-set your routes from any given point and it will pretty accurately track your distance. I have a heart rate monitor but it only tracks calories burned, duration of activity, and heart rate. Others have a GPS built in.

Map My Run, as mentioned by a previous poster is pretty good. There is also http://www.gmap-pedometer.com/, which I've found I prefer.

If you walk outside, like around your neighborhood, there are apps (like mapmyrun) or websites (WalkJogRun (http://www.walkjogrun.net/)) that you can use to calculate your distance.

if you have a smart phone you can get an app, i like endomondo. it connects your gps and tracks where you walk and your speed etc

I don't walk outside.. it's too hot so I walk inside. If I can do the 20 min equals one mile then I got in 2.5 miles yesterday Aug 1st.

You could pick up a cheap pedometer and have it count your walking steps :)

0.875 miles by today (I hurt my knee a couple days ago and I didn't realize how much it would effect me). I've sorted out a good walking route though and look forward to keeping you updated!

LovelyLeah, I love incorporating my exercise/walking into daily routines and chores. I feel like I've got multitasking superpowers when I'm able to kill two birds with one stones like you did tonight.

Aclai, I hope that you enjoyed your weekend out of town! Great that you got those miles in on Friday before you left.


I signed up for a 10k that started in the town next to my boyfriend's, and he was gracious enough to let me stay the night at his place even though he was at work. Getting to the race was so much more convenient than it otherwise would have been, but it was still almost a 3 mile walk between his house and the starting point. Totally exhausted tonight!

Nienna86 A 10k Yikes! I am barely getting used to my 5k walks. Go you! Except if you did a 10k it seems your numbers are off... 10k= 6.2 miles + 3 for the starting point walk = 9.2 for one of those days?

Today was a walk and I got in 3.33 mi :) making my total 13.23, Half way there! yay! maybe Ill aim for 52.4 or even 78.6 at this rate, but first I'll complete the 26.2

I would rather give up food to lose weight than exercise. I still plan on finishing the monthly marathon. I tell myself if I can finish one this month perhaps I can finish two next month and up my walks to daily. Small changes...

Seaurchin No worries. That's the whole point of this. I think some on here are probably more advanced in their workout routines so no need to compare with them. You have the right mindset, complete the goal in front of you and then worry about doing more later. There are still 25 days left in this month, you have plenty of time.

Seaurchin, I think you're doing it just right! I'd take steady and consistent over fast any day. I run but I have to admit that I haven't kept to a schedule and am inconsistent as of late. Only a couple of years ago I was running SMWF religiously. Due to my inconsistency I've lost tone, but more importantly, I've lost my discipline. Recapturing my discipline is all up to me. Your point about sacrificing food is well taken. Food discipline and sacrifice will get and keep you at goal better and quicker than anything else. As lovely Kaplods' signature line states: "You can't out exercise poor eating habits." Ain't that the truth!

Okay I'm going to be honest here..... last night I walked a total of 9 miles. Which I'm actually amazed at. I was left with swollen and throbbing legs-totally over did it my body wasn't ready for that. The time was 3 hours 19 minutes. Again I didn't mean to over do it.

So my complete total so far: 12 miles.

BUT then today I did 1 mile with my mom and that would bring it 13 miles.

curvy psh I'm sure you will finish! I'm planning to keep adding miles once I complete this one, When I hit the 26.2 I'm just gonna change my ticker to 52.4 and keep at it. I'm thinking I can maybe do 2 and a half in the month. But you are rocking it! You could likely do 4, go for it!

Thanks for your kind words of encouragement pnkrckpixikat :hug: For me, I don't want to suck the fun out of the challenge so I'll need to find the right balance between doing mileage activities/exercise that I love and raising the bar for myself. In the past I've gotten so caught up in the goal that I forgot all about the fun which robs me of some of the experience.

I really appreciate LovelyLeah for creating this challenge and everyone here who is working so consistently on getting in their miles. Folks seem to be having a great time with it. It never occurred to me to think about all the miles I walk, run, etc in terms of a marathon. And quite honestly, this may be the only marathon I ever participate in.

I love summer storms! Did you get a good lightning show too? I remember when I was little that my parents would turn off all the lights and we'd hang out in front of the picture window in the living room to watch.

Not so much, it was more heavy, heavy rain and wind and some hail. But at my mom's work they had baseball sized hail and almost everyone's car windows were smashed in, not so awesome. Luckily she had left work shortly before that happened and had to actually pull under a bridge because of how insane it got. She had no damage, thank God. Still fun to sit on the porch and watch it and feel the storm in the air.

Running almost 2 miles on the beach is not lazy in my book!!! I was in california earlier in the summer and I had a hard time WALKING .5mi on the beach. Can't even imagine running lol

LovelyLeah you have me at 12.4 but I've added it several times and I'm only coming out as 11 miles total as of yesterday August 10th.

I got you squared away. I might have counted one of your days twice or something. Sometimes I lose track of who was the last person I updated.

It wouldn't be a bad idea for everyone to be double checking.


I walked around the mall I work at 4 times. Each floor is .5 mile around so I did 2 miles. I wanted to scream at the really slow shoppers to move. Which is sad because that's how I am when I shop too. But when I'm trying to get some exercise in all I can think of them is as a roadblock.

You still have 20 days left and 24.2 miles to go. If you commit to walking 1 mile each day and 2 miles one day out of the week you could definitely make it. There are websites that can help you pick a route in your area that would would equal a mile or if you have a gym membership you can do it on treadmill. Another option is a pedometer. There are websites that can help you to convert your steps into miles.

I walked 6.5 miles today. It was easiest to go straight from church to work than to go home and immediately turn around and go to work. So I walked around the mall for about 1.5 hours before work.

You were blue but I must have not updated it on the other list I've been keeping. I have a Note up on my computer that I've been adjusting everyones' records as I go but I wasn't sure if the code for Blue was really Blue so I didn't update that list. Then when I updated some other mileage I just copied and pasted the wrong one. It's been adjusted now...on both lists!

Lovelyleah - thanks for the websites! I am not new to walking :) We have a circle driveway that I use as a track a lot, and we have a huge lake here with a 2 mile track around it, and another park where I enjoy walking. I just needed to get going again after slacking for a few months. This has given me the motivation!

I walked 3.39 miles in the driveway last night...so a total of 5.39 now.

This sounds like a great idea! I'd be joining a little late but I think I can still do it. I've had a leg/foot injury that has kept me on the couch for almost three weeks :mad:, but it's now almost healed and I'm more than ready to get back into running. :dizzy: Hopefully this will be my motivation to find time to lace up my shoes tomorrow!

I think it's updated though I may have counted some of you twice. My computer last night decided it wanted to update itself, without my permission. Normally I'm okay with that but I've been keeping track of the edit code on a Note on my desktop so it makes editing and updating on here smoother. Well it wasn't completely saved and I don't remember when I last updated yesterday so I had to guess at who I did last. So double check yours.

My knee is feeling better today, and I got in 1.65 miles when we went grocery shopping this morning, for a total of 33.96! We have company and I have to be social with them so I will try my best to get out and about while they are here, without seeming rude. :P

I'm going to have to bow out of this month's challenge. Even though the foot doctor told me I could run with the brace he gave me, the brace isn't letting me go more than a quarter mile before it gets painful. I see him again in a month, so hopefully I can try this again in September or October!

Fairandfree I don't know if I will even try get to a half. Thats why I haven't changed my ticker. Anything from here on out is really bonus. I have felt so burnt out this week that not much has gotten done exercise wise. I also hurt my foot somehow so even walking hasn't been happening much. I think it was from jogging on uneven ground, tweaked it somehow :(

fairandfree hope you did well at dinner!! good for you for planning it out! we went out for dinner last night, we were heading to our pizza place for on plan personal pizzas and at the last minute decided to try this italian place in the same shopping center. It ended up being a much nicer place than we expected so instead of staying OP (had 900 cals left) I splurged on veal parm and split some sort of pastery puff thing. so either tonight or tomorrow morning will be doing some extra walking (maybe both lol)

Punk, I did! I ate nothing more than what I had planned and even had steamed veggies as my side when everyone else had far more delicious things, lol (though I LIKE broccoli!). No one wanted to stay for desert so that was a good thing! Calories in like one piece of cheesecake there were over 1000 (?) apparently, and I think I would have felt bad for a year after eating it! Your veal parm does sound nice though, I love that stuff! mmmm

Anywho, between yesterday and today, adding on 6.09 more briskly miles for a total of 55.38! :D I am going to go ahead and call it quits for challenge-walking this month, though I have really enjoyed myself! I hope maybe in September we can do something similar!
