Question My therapist says I should start writing again: topic help?

Okay she says my constant day dreaming is escapism and a coping mechanism. Probably to escape from my past 2 long SEVERE bipolar depression episode. Anyways now I am doing poorly and school (Not doing homework) and my mom is VERY upset about it. My therapist says we need to slowly draw my mind out of my fantasy world (I don't have to give it up completely-just make it so it's not taking over my REAL life-which it does in every aspect). She said I should start start writing again. But I can't think of a topic... Ideas?

I would start by writing about everything you are grateful for in life and about those things which gives you pleasure.

Encase your wondering how writing helps keep me out of my fantasy-my brain has to think more and do physical typing keeping me in reality. Its like a start-it will progress.

When I was going through problems, I went through something similar. I used to just write. About nothing. My journals literally have pages full of nothing but "Think of a topic" written over and over again. And then...all of the sudden, they boom into stories about murder mystery, camping nightmares, world doom...now that I think about it, they were kinda dark. But none the less, that is what I used to do. If I ever get the courage up, I have 17 completely finished novels I should try to publish. Most of them are rather decent, two have been fully edited and all I had to do was sign on the dotted line, but I chickened out. Something about using it as my coping mechanism and making a profit just doesn't sit right with me.

But my advice? Just write. The topic will come in its own time.

Wolfgirl

I used to daydream all the time and I still do. I have Bipolar also and it can be difficult to deal with, I agree.

I have found writing to be very helpful throughout my life. It helps me get my ideas out on paper or on a computer, such as keeping a diary where I can get write out what I am feeling and sometimes no one has to see it, just me.

Maybe just write about anything thought that comes into your mind. If you don't want to write, then I suggest writing about that! Let yourself view writing as a release, and let the pen or pencil do the work that puts your thoughts through to to the paper.

I know it is difficult to have Bipolar and I used to daydream so much that I was tested for ADD and ADHD. I do have aspects of it and these diagnoses are challenging but I won't give up and neither should you!

Feel free to private message me if you like

Also, I want to suggest a book called Slices of Life by Cheryl Stahle. It has writing exercises and is fun! I met Cheryl and her advice to me about writing is when you don't know what to write, just write!

Wolfgirl, I am so glad I could help. You seem like you are feeling better now, which is great news. I am happy for you that you have found the right med combo! That is so important, I think.

Do you ever check out the Depression board? I am there a lot and there is a Daily Chat thread where people post how they are doing, I like it a lot. It's a great board. There are a lot of other good websites for Bipolar.

Take care, keep in touch.
