Default Atkins and weight training???

Hi all,

I joined a gym on Monday to workout on cardio and weight training. I mainly wanted to accompany weight training (machines and free weights) because I've been told that building muscle burns fat, and cardio burns calories - so it's twice as good to do both. Wednesday I met with a trainer at the gym to show me how to work on the weight machines, take my heart rate for target cardio zones and talk to me about what I should be doing to get to my goals. He asked me what my diet was like and as soon as I said I am doing the Atkins nutritional approach he shook his head and said that Atkins is not good for weight training and working out constantly because our bodies need fuel and carbs during muscle building. I know Atkins works well for me because it has in the past, but thinking back - I never really did any exercise and NEVER lifted any weights while doing Atkins.

I really would prefer not going back to having to eat 5 to 6 meals a day and calorie counting if I can. Any opinions on this??? I don't recall reading anything about weight training and Atkins in Dr. Atkins' book.
