Hey guys! I'm new to this board and also to the south beach diet. I am currently on day 3 of phase one. I was a total carbaholic before this, but I haven't had terrible cravings for carbs yet. However, a lot of it is mental for me. I have been pushing the thought of food out of my mind and keeping myself busy which has helped a lot. And I've already found that I'm thinking less about food!
Now for my question: I read the SB book and it says on phase one you can't have any dairy (specifically yogurt [cup style and frozen], ice cream and milk [low fat, fat free, whole, and soy]). However, a lot of the recipes I've found online for phase one includes greek yogurt and low fat sour cream. Are these exceptions? I would loove to have some greek yogurt or include some sour cream on something like the taco bake recipe!
Thanks for any help!!
In my SB book, under phase 1 foods to enjoy, it says 2 cups of dairy allowed daily, including nonfat or low-fat plain yogurt. You might want to re-read that section again.
I'm not sure where you read that no dairy is allowed on Phase 1. From page 178 of the South Beach Super-Charged Diet - Foods to enjoy - it states we're allowed up to 2 cups of milk (1% or nonfat), nonfat plain yogurt, nonfat greek yogurt, etc.
There is also a sticky wth the Phase I foods to enjoy on the South Beach thread here at 3FC.
I have been eating the plain, nonfat Greek yogurt with just a little Splenda. I didn't think I'd like it but I really do!
Yep, the older versions say no dairy, but the newest version allows it. I think it's related to the new(ish) research that shows that eating dairy can help with weight loss, but I have nothing to back that up.
I read the SB book and it says on phase one you can't have any dairy (specifically yogurt [cup style and frozen], ice cream and milk [low fat, fat free, whole, and soy]).
I think I get where the misunderstanding is: In the "Foods to Avoid" listing, it shows Dairy - specifically yogurt [cup style and frozen], ice cream and milk 2% or whole]). It's not all-or-nothing - there are dairy foods to enjoy and dairy foods to avoid.
Hope this makes sense! If you already figured this out, cool!
beachbum, chelsea is right - the first version of the book did not allow much if any dairy. Every few years South Beach goes through revisions to keep it up-to-date, like Weight Watchers does. I bought the new book - South Beach Diet Supercharged - and highly recommend it.
to The Beach, Beachbum! I see the Beachers have set you straight regarding dairy on Phase 1, and feel free to ask any other questions you may have and join in any threads. As you already discovered, everyone here is willing to help out and give you plenty of support and motivation.
