Hi there JUNE . . .
to the Diabetes Forum and
as well.
I'm so sorry to hear of your recent diagnosis and I know it seems terribly overwhelming at the moment -- but take it from one who is definitely NOT new to living with diabetes; it is not the end of the good part of life. The disease cannot be cured (at present) but it can definitely be controlled. Losing even 10% of your body weight can help get you headed in the right direction.
Witchy is quite correct . . . you need to talk to your doctor and get a referral to a Diabetes Education Centre. They are usually staffed by nurse specialists and dietician specialists who are absolutely your best source for information and diet guidelines especially tailored for you. Most health plans cover DEC visits, too.
In the meantime, have a look around the Diabetes Forum -- especially the Stickies area at the top of the forum page. There is lots of good information and important links in there. IMHO, the best thing you can do while waiting for your DEC appointment is to read everything you can. I don't think you can possibly get too much information.
Also, I certainly hope you will come over and join us on our regular monthly chat thread called DIETING WITH DIABETES. It's amazing how comforting it can be to realize that you are not alone, Chickie . . . we honestly care and are ready to offer you every possible bit of support we can.
See you soon . . .
