Okay, I thought someone else would do this, but I can't resist. I am so emotional today, waiting for the last book. I've been reading HP with my kids for almost 10 years, they have grown up with him, and I feel like he's one of mine too. I am anxious to read the book, but I dread finishing and knowing there are no more to come.
So,
Is Snape truly evil or is he loyal to Dumbledore, in which case, did Dumbledore set up his own death to protect Snape from Voldemort?
Is Harry one of the Horcruxes?
Most importantly, will Harry have to die?
What role will Neville play?
These are the hotly debated topics at my house. If it doesn't end well for Harry I will be devastated.
What are your thoughts?

I almost cried one night when my DH started insisting everyone is going to have to die. He is right that it would almost make sense for Rowling to kill Harry so no one can try to continue the series. I will be devastated though. All I want is for Ron and Hermione to get married and live happily ever after.

I think Harry and Voldemort will both die in the end.

I truely believe Harry is one of the Horcruxes and here is why:

1.) Voldemort has to murder to split his soul. Maybe Harry's parent weren't in the way but actually sacrifices.
2.) Harry can see into Voldemort's mind, feel his emotions, and has some of the same powers like talking to snakes. I don't think it's because powers were transferred with the curse but because a piece of the soul is in Harry.
3.) Voldemort probably figured that Dumbledore would eventually find and destroy the Horcruxes so why not put his soul in the one thing Dumbledore who never think to destroy - a living person.
4.) I'm not to sure but I think the prophecy said something along the lines of "as long as one lives so does the other?" Voldemort can't be destroyed as long as a piece of his soul is safe. Why not put it in your fated enemy? Then he can't destroy you without destroying himself.
5.) The Death Eaters are always yelling at Snape for not killing Harry when he's had so many chances. Maybe Snape knows Harry is a Horcrux and wouldn't dare destroy his boss's soul.

I had a few more but can't think of them off hand. :D

I have a feeling, in the end, Harry will have to destroy himself to finally destroy Voldemort. I'm really sad to see this series end. It was the one thing I could really look forward to year after year. And the movies are so great. Makes me want to be a witch and live at Hogwarts!

Oh chicks, you're making me emotional too! :(

I grew up with HP. I outaged him due to the rate of the books, but we were the same age for awhile there. I admit that I cry a lot reading books (I read Jane Eyre with a fresh box of tissues every year) but I've never cried so hard as the Order of the Phoenix. I almost don't want to see the movie because I know I'll just end up embarassing myself. I think I'll end up going with my boyfriend's friends (they're all Potter Heads, he's not) which will make it even worse!

Anyone doing any release parties? The band Harry and the Potters are doing a free concert a few blocks from my house and I'll be there. They're pretty interesting- two brothers who dress up like HP (one as year 2, the other as year 5.. I think) and sing songs based on the books. Really funny. :) They're local but they play shows all over the country... they're really popular in Atlanta.

And Jessie- I agree. All I really want is for Ron and Hermione to get together and have lots of bushy haired red heads with a penchant for mischief!

I'm attending a midnight party at Border's on July 20 to get my reserved book!!! I think they even hired a magician to come that night for the release party, think it'll be fun! But I'm giving it up for the first 2 days so my daughter can read it first before she goes to teen camp on Monday. Or I'll just read it while she's sleeping! I didn't want to buy 2 books but it'll be hard to not sit next to her and read it over her :).

I would never read the end first...I am not that kind of gal.

I am having a moral dilemma because we realized last night we're doing Backyard Bible Club every Saturday morning and won't be able to get our library copies until AFTERNOON! But I am thinking God is going to be more important than HP...

I should really dig into #6 and refresh my memory!

And is anyone else SO going to the movie on Wednesday when it comes out? I think I've been to every movie on opening day and I don't plan to miss this one!!

Is Harry and the Potters the band that sings "Rita Skeeter Better Shut Her Mouth Before She Gets in Trouble...."? My sister downloaded a bunch of HP songs one summer and we were hysterical over them.

I bought my tix for the midnight show of OOTP! I'm so excited Pre ordered with Amazon but looking for a book party to go to too!
OK!
1, Harry as horcrux: Not sure it does make sense but the Love that protected him from the avada kedavra surely would reject Voldemorts soul. Remember Quirrel couldn't even touch him without burning up
2. While I'm not a fan of Snape (shady beeep) I think he had an Unbreakable Vow with Dumbledore so that Malfoy wouldn't have to become a murderer. He can spot true evil (Much like Tom Riddle's evil when he was at school and came back wanting to teach) He is much savvier than that
3. Harry Lives! he has too thats just it :)
4 Neville I hope will kick some Lestrange butt! He has a true heart and has always been faithful to Harry.

Ron and Hermione Better frickin get married and make lil bushy haired redheaded Weaselys!
I also think Ginny will get to kick some butt I'm just hoping she survives
OH! and I think I know where the locket Horcrux is!
I'm so excited I could BOUNCE!

I'm way excited for the movie and book too! I've been re-reading the HP books through again since mid-June. I should finish the fifth one up in time for the movie.

I'm actually going to a costume party at a local bookstore for HP...how nerdy am I? For the fifth book, the boyfriend and I went as Gilderoy Lockhart and Winky. This time, I'm thinking Lupin and Tonks. Anyone have a good recipe for "diet butterbeer"? :D

Allie, I'm so jealous you've got Harry and the Potters coming! By the way, how's your ankle?

JessieW, saw your post from the daily chat! I actually live in the Fan too! But here's the kicker...I was born and raised not far from where you are now...an hour and half west of Nashville on I-40. Talk about a 1-2 switcharoo, huh?

Stress!! I'm currently re-reading all of the books so I'll be prepped for 7. I can't wait!! I read that 2 main characters are killed. While it makes sense that she'd kill Harry, my husband keeps trying to reassure us both that she's not going to do that since it is a children's book. But I don't know, she's killed before.

I think that Snape is good and killed Dumbledore because he promised him he would if he had to.

I've told my husband that if she kills of Ron or Hermione and he finds out before me, I just want him to go ahead and give me the bad news. That way I can start preparing myself!!

Ok, I also love the Harry Potter books, but seem to have forgotten some things from the last book based on all of these posts. I have to pull it out (fast) and start rereading!

I do believe Dumbledore is dead - but he can still help Harry - the world is magical and anything can happen.

I do believe Ron and Hermoine will get together and stay with Harry through his journey, he needs both of them. Her for her brains and Ron for his friendship. Love saved Harry once and the love of his friends can do it again. Sadly in saying that I do worry about Ginny, I could more easily see JK killing her off than Ron, Hermoine, or Harry himself. They love each other and that is known whether Harry breaks up with her or not.

I also cried like a baby at the end of the last book - after I almost didn't finish. When the deatheaters were chasing Hagrid (after Dumbledore died) and I thought they may kill him as well I almost couldn't keep reading! Crazy isn't it?

Oh wow, I am so glad I'm not the only dork who loves Harry madly. Not that I'm not totally okay with my nerdiness, but it's nice to have company. Now that I've insulted you all, you raise some interesting points:

Jenny. Is totally dispensible. Sorry, that's just the way I feel.
Ron and Hermione, I'm not sure how I feel about them. The books have never convinced me why Hermione would like Ron. Who would pick Ron over Harry?
I hope Neville gets a moment of glory. I really think he and Jenny should end up together.
There are many arguments that support the Horcrux theory, but the prophecy actually is an argument against, I think. The prophecy in part is that "either must die at the hand of the other for neither can live while the other survives." Which is a little obscure, but I interpret as one must die so the other can live. If Harry was a horcrux, the one must die so the other can die.
JK Rowling has never been afraid of the dark side, so I am really afraid of what she'll do to Harry. I just want to beg her, please, please, please let him live.

I just know as soon as the books are released, there will be all kinds of stupid news anchors blowing the plot, or I'll hear someone in line at the grocery store discussing it. I think it gets released in Europe first, so it'll surely be all over the internet. So I'm thinking I'll barricade myself in the house that weekend and just read and if I have to go out I'll wear earplugs. I am impatient so I will have to fight against reading the end first. And yes, the kids and I will be in line to see the movie the first day for sure.
Isn't it interesting how Harry Potter fans come in all ages?
Betty, who got to be Winky?

I think Hermione and Ron just make sense. Plus, Rupert Grint is SO much more attractive than Daniel Radcliffe. :P The whole Hermione- Ron thing just makes sense to me because I'm VERY much a Hermione (down to the bushy hair!). I dated a guy very seriously for 3 years who was very much a Ron (down to the red hair :P). We would probably be married now if not for an over 1000 mile geographical difference during most of the time we were together.

I also really hope Neville gets his moment. Poor kid.

One thing I love about Harry Potter is it allows me to shine in all my geekdom glory - in public. Normally, I have to hide behind my attempts at a 'normal' facade. However, I will refrain from geeking out over Transformers or any Star Wars trivia and stick to the Harry Potter subject at hand....

Frankly, I will be angry and disgusted and using very bad language if she kills Harry. One of the things I enjoyed about the books was that (starting with Goblet of Fire) the endings were rather unpredictable. I stared in absolute shock and had to go back and re-read things when she killed Cedric. I was dumbstruck - how could Cedric die? Its a children's book!? I was even more furious when Sirius died - by that point I wasn't shocked that she killed someone but shocked that it was someone who had become one of my favorite characters and who was so important to Harry. (I'm still harboring some hard feelings about that). Frankly, by the time she killed Dumbledore, I saw it coming and wasn't very surprised. I think killing Harry would be a) too predictable - just look at all the speculation and b) would cause an insane amount of anger - I did not invest the time and effort into this series and these characters to have the primary one die. Now, we know that a main character will die - she's told us that much. But I hope she finds some way to surprise us and leave us feeling - despite losing a main character - satisfied and content with the end.

I have noticed that with each death, she's emphasizing that there are no ghosts or visits from the other side. Even when Harry's parents sometimes appear, she clear to state (usually via Dumbledore) that they are just visions or shadows or such - that its not really his parents spirits or ghosts. So I would be surprised if we see visits from Dumbledore (in the "use the force, Luke) kind of sense. If anything, Dumbledore has left Harry clues and information.

As far as Snape - I'm siding with Dumbledore on that. I fail to believe that someone as wise and powerful as he would be completely oblivious to Snape being evil. Especially when he so vehemently defends him to Harry.

OK, enough geeking out for now. Some of you are right though - its going to be near impossible to not overhear someone / somewhere giving away the ending so my husband and I will have to lock ourselves in the house and read it before we expose ourselves to the public. Regardless of what happens, I do not want the end spoiled.

Sarynit, of course I am a fan of Ms. Rowling, since her brain created this wonderful world that I love to visit. But one thing I both love and hate about her is that she's unpredictable and sometimes merciless. She has taken us on a great ride so far, so I guess I'll just have to trust her judgement. I hope you're right about Harry.
Charolastra, that's so funny that you had your own Ron and Hermione thing going on. I don't find either Harry or Ron particularly attractive, but it would be pretty disgusting if I did, since I could be their mother. I just feel more protective and maternal towards Harry than Ron, probably for the obvious reason, Ron's got a pretty good mom already.

Eek - I just re-read my post...I sound very harsh! What can I say - one of the brilliant things about Rowling's writing is she is able to evoke such emotion from her readers.

I brought up this thread to my dh at dinner last night and his prediction is (like you charolastra) Snape is one of the ones that will be killed. AND he predicts that the other prophesy is that Harry is going to be the one to kill Snape and Snape knows it which is another reason why he despises Harry so much but Snape is committed to the good side and therefore is still going to play his role in bringing down Voldemort even if it means that he has to die. This would also explain why Dumbledore so vehemently defends Snape without giving Harry many specifics why.

His other prediction is that Hogwart's is one of the Horcruxes (since it was one of Voldemort's happiest times) and therefore Hogwarts must be destroyed.

We shall find out soon enough....

My theory on the events at the end of HBP is that Dumbledore was actually pleading with Snape to kill him. If the Death Eaters hadn't been so wrapped up in the fact that Draco or Snape needed to kill Dumbledore, they would have noticed that there were two brooms on the roof. Who would be with Dumbledore besides Harry? I feel that if Snape had not killed Dumbledore, Harry's life would have been in jeopardy and that Snape knew that. That leads me to believe that Snape will, in the end, be on the side of good. Finally, the stunning spell Dumbledore shot towards the Death Eaters, I firmly believe was MEANT to hit Harry so Harry wouldn't try to save him.

I can't wait for next week. And I've got my copy of DH reserved and will be attending a midnight party (and leaving quickly) to pick it up. CAN'T WAIT??

Oh, and are you all aware of the Universal Orlando Harry Potter theme park being constructed now? It's supposed to open in late 2009 or early 2010. I can't wait for that either. DH and I are planning on attending in the summer of 2010.

Harry Potter has been in life for almost ten years... I remember the first time I read it! From fourth grade to being a senior in high school this year I have loved Harry Potter.

I can't wait for the last book and I honestly want Harry to die. How else could it end?

How are you guys going to read the book? I think i will keep the internet closed, minus my spark people account, and just eat, exercise, and read. I would hate to have the book spoiled. The ending of the fifth book was spoiled for me so I am taking extra steps to be careful!

Missmess, I will give you that one. I do believe she considers the main characters to be not only Harry, Voldemort, Hermione, and Ron, but also Snape, Neville, Draco, Jenny, Hagrid, Prof. McGonagall, as well - anyone who appears regularly and in whom we are emotionally vested in either direction. I would consider non- main characters to be those like Cho Chang, Luna (although we'll see), the Parvatis, Pansy Parkinson, and so on.

RocknRoll, I think we'll definitely have to go into quarantine next weekend. I do not want anyone to spoil it for me. I may get violent, if necessary.

All we have is a cruddy old theater with two screens. I'd kill for just one more screen. (It's a drag when all that's showing is two of the same type of movie.) It's such a pain with only one ticket window and the line going around the corner. I just figure that there won't be a lot of people there at midnight. I usually wait until the day the book is released and then go to Sam's or Walmart they usually have the book a little cheaper than other places on release day. In regards to the movie OOTP I will probably have to see if by myself I think my little ones might be too frightened. Especially, if it's anything like the book. I can't wait to see it I think I might escape to the movie this weekend. Hopefully, a mommy break day.:

Harry as a horcrux is not a new theory. Dumbledore did say that Voldemort unwillingly transfered some of Voldemort's power to Harry. So maybe along with that part of his soul. One interesting thing is that Voldemort wants to kill Harry and I would think that if Voldemort knew that Harry was a horcrux Voldemort wouldn't be doing that.

On the Snape front I totally believe that Snape killed Dumbledore because Snape had a unbreakable vow with Dumbledore. Dumbledore is far too wise and went to bat for Snape too many times to be that easily fooled. Not to mention that Snape had the chance to kill Harry after Snape killed Dumbledore and did not. Snape was also clearly upset about what had happened.

Sadly, I believe that JK has no bones about killing both Harry and Voldemort off. Especially, since she has expressed a tremendous dislike of anyone continuing the series. My only hope is that I've heard that she considers Harry to be a son to her and no mother could kill their own child right?
Here's to hope.

The HP fan sites are great. Anyone curious check them out. I belong to a couple of them.;) (the big kid that I am) I'm glad that everyone re-signed to star in all of the HP films. Idk if I would go see the movies if they changed the main cast.

Cottage, so glad you enjoyed the book. I saw the movie last Thursday with the kids and really enjoyed it. Luna was great, Prof Umbridge was perfectly evil, the only complaint was the compression of the confrontations at the Ministry of Magic. Just all over too quick. But I am one that would be happy to sit through three hours of it, and a movie just can't be as good as a book. I really do want to get to see it at the Imax. That fight scene would be sooo cool in 3D. SO excited for Saturday, we are heading for the beach and I'm on vacation for a week, so Harry will be keeping me company there!

I knew that would happen with all the spoilers on the web. People are so obnoxious. I am not going to go to any HP fansites until after I read it, and if they start talking about it on the news or anyone wants to discuss, I'll put my fingers in my ears and sing!

They're expecting to be able to distribute all the books in an hour though so that's good! Especially considering that so many people are buying from this one store because it's right off of Harvard Square and so convenient to get to.

I am SO ready for tomorrow. I have a few mini-splurges planned for tomorrow since I'm restarting SB again on Sunday anyway. I got a sugar free energy drink because I'm probably going to be up for 24 hours (first splurge.. though it's just junk, not necessarily unBeachy). I also got a few whole wheat bagels and am planning some toppings for each quarter- mushed bananas (maybe with some grated zucchini, no se), lox and tomatoes, and grilled veggies.

I'm planning on eating really light (though still nutritious) all day- no starches- and then plowing right through the night. :) I'm so excited! I'm just hoping the rain lets up, there's supposed to be an outdoor concert before the release plus people are probably going to have to stand outside!

Just my $0.02 - but I think McGonagall is going to be one who dies. She's old, very loyal to Dumbledore, a big influence on Harry... She's the one who was holding the school together behind the scenes when Dumbledore couldn't, and now she's Head Mistress. While I wouldn't consider her a main character, neither would I call her a secondary character either.

The same goes for Hagrid.

Killing off Snape would be way to predictable, and not the 'twist' that we've come to expect. The Malfoys - not big players, and would be expected. Neville - too much like Cedric... any of the Weasleys - too soon after OOTP snake attack on Mr. Weasley.

Offing Ron, Hermione, or Ginny shocking, devastating, crushing to everyone.

Now Harry and Voldermort. We know that Ms. R. doesn't mine controversy - she killed off Dumbledore - didn't she? But I think everyone expects Voldermort to die and Harry to live - that's the "Warm fuzzy" we all want there to be at the end of the series. However, I really don't think it's going to be that happy. I wouldn't be shocked if Harry is the one who dies at the end of the book. That would be fitting for Ms. R. to ensure the end of the saga (and make sure that no one else can continue writing after she's done). That being said - I do believe that deep down, most people think that's going to happen - they won't be happy about it though.

WOW!!! I feel like a Conspiracy Theorist! ROFLMAO!!!!!

Warning, there is a spoiler in the Harry Potter thread under 3FC General Chat. One of the posters got hold of the book early at a public library, glanced at the end and posted some details. Not who dies, but still things I don't want to know. I'd prefer not to know anything for sure. I love the speculating, but don't tell me anything for sure. Now, everybody insert their earplugs!

I totally agree there are some spoilers on the thread I wish they had given a heads up.I mean I haven't gotten to see the movie yet and although I must of read the book 4x's the movie always changes something up.

I think that JK needed to kill Dumbledore. In every good SciFi or Fantasy series the master always dies so that the student can come to his/her full potential. ie. Luke Skywalker and Obi Wan. No I'm not a Star Wars geek but I think it's one of the best examples.

13 hours later- I have the book! I first had to wait 2 1/2 hours just to get a wristband to prove that I had preordered, then went to a free concert (Harry and the Potters and Draco and the Malfoys are SO funny!), until 8:45. Then I ran to Qdoba to use the bathroom and get a salad that I wolfed, then ran to get in line by 9:15 though technically we weren't supposed to form a line until 10. Since I'm a ninja, I managed to get near the front in the confusion of trying to break up the mass blob near the door. I ended up being the 40thish person in line so I got to wait in the bookstore (sitting on the ground to try to salvage my poor ankle) and walked out the door at 12:06 with cameras flashing in my face. Look for me in the news! I just got home and am trying to calm myself into opening the book.

See you all in the morning! :P

I'm so jealous! If I weren't in stinkin' West Texas, I'd have the book already and probably be 1/4 of the way through it by now. But no, I live in a one-bookstore town. Sigh. Enjoy your reading. I hope to be joining you by 10 this morning.

I finished about 2 1/2 hours ago. Sadly, I'm terribly disappointed. Not necessarily with the plot line, but the quality of the writing.

Now I'm waiting to fall asleep.

Yikes!! 2 1/2 hours. I walked into walmart at 12:15 and walked out with my copy about 12:20. Gotta love your local Walmart. I, of course, haven't been on because I been reading virtually none stop since I got it.

Allie, interesting that you were disappointed with the quality of writing, I thoroughly enjoyed the book. Maybe it's a difference of expectations because I didn't have high hope for the last book because I think a lot of good authors have a hard time with the ending and I withheld my hopes because I knew more people are going to die. Also, I love the Harry Potter series but I don't regard it in the same level of writing as the Lord of the Rings books. My 2 cents.

We got it at 9:30 on Saturday morning and I finished about 4:30!!! I thought the quality was up to her other books, I wasn't disappointed--same sharp humor and details. I don't want to spoil for anyone who hasn't read it yet. Can we start a big "SPOILER" thread for those who are finished?

There is already a spoiler thread in the general chat forum, but if everyone here wants to discuss it on our own, I think that'd be great!

I saw that there was a few things that could have been explained better. I think a little too much time was spent with certain details and not enough time on others. I don't want to spoil the book for anyone. As a large part of it was spoiled for me by some idiot that was standing in line behind me and said something out loud from the epilogue that ruined the suspense factor. Some people are such a#$%#.

However, I think it's just her style of writing. I remember when I finished GOF and after waiting forever. I was so excited to get OOTP and then found myself utterly disappointed by the fact that she didn't start OOTP off on the same high point where GOF ends. Things that I thought were important to the story I guess wasn't important after all, just like Deathly Hallows. I still enjoyed the book and wish the epilogue was a little longer.

Yep! Totally bummed:( But you never know a lot of authors say that it's the last book and then 5-10 years later write another. Maybe there might be more adventures in her wizarding world or something similar to it. With the same or different characters (of course you have to read the book to find out who the characters could possibly be).
