hi.....i started my journey towards weight loss about two months ago......i know everyone has a different metabolism and it also depends on what type of food you eat and so on....but i was wondering how long it took on average to loose 40 pounds???
It is such an individual process! Most pro's say 2 pounds a week is a healthy average to go for, and some of us have had 10 pound weeks and 0 pound weeks! I have lost 40 pounds in 2 months in the past, and kept it off for a few years, but I am now at my highest weight ever
Have you checked with your doctor/nutritionist/dietitian to see what would be healthiest for you?
like you said, there are a million variables, but for someone losing at a fairly steady clip (2lb/wk) It works out to about 5 months,
BUT what does it really matter? every pound lost is a victory if it is not coming back on. You're either going to be heavier or lighter in 5 months, might as well be lighter
no not yet...but I don't have any problems I had a checkup a couple of months ago...I've done ww in the past it worked...but right now I'm doing calorie counting....I'm losing weight at a steady rate...but I was just curious...and thank you good luck to you too
It really depends on things like (but not limited to) your starting weight (the bigger you are, the more you may lose at the start), what food choices you make (eating low calories, but junk food won't help!) and how active you choose to be (some people find building muscle tones them beautifully, but the scale may move more slowly).
I started mid-March, and in 9 weeks, I've lost 33 pounds. I would say this is NOT typical, I am very careful with my portions and choices, I am quite active and I was very heavy to start with.
I still haven't lost 40 lbs, I've averaged about 1.5 lbs... though I actually was losing a lot more, then I plateaued, now I'm back on track. It is really had not to be overly impatient. I feel I've put in so much work, I should be in a string bikini by now. I try to remember that I'm learning the habits to help me stay thin
I lost 40 pounds my first two months -- one of the reasons is because I started at over 300 did pretty grueling exercise for a 300 pound person and was 100% faithful to my diet. As the others said, it depends -- if you're starting at 180 and want to get to 140, there's no way that could happen. Bigger people have faster metabolisms as well -- so weight is dropped off quicker initially.
As you get closer to your goal, a rate of 2 lbs per week probably isn't realistic. It took me 8 months to lose 30 lbs. Like Harpo, I also did pretty grueling exercise (including 3 days a week with a personal trainer and doing some form of exercise on my own for the other four days) and was very faithful to my diet (with the exception of a couple of vacations/business trips), which was only 1200-1300 calories per day.
sunshine-someone who is starting at a very high weight-like over 300 pounds-is going to lose their first 40 pounds much, much faster than say, someone who is 180 and going down to 140.

Men also tend to lose weight faster than women as well. It also depends on what exercise you are doing, etc.-there are a LOT of variables. Some here have lost 40 pounds in 3 months, and others over a 2 year period. It depends on many, many things.
It took me 6 months to lose 33 pounds. I tried to eat around 1400-1500 calories a day and I walked 5 days a week for 30 minutes and went to the gym 3 days a week. Dang....maybe i should start doing that again!!!! Adding in the 30 minute walk at lunch. unfortunately now, it's starting to get hot at lunch and i hate to sweat and then have to come back in and sit at a desk and wait on people. :-(
