Sounds like you don't want to lose the motivation of trying to reach your goal because once you achieve it it won't be anything left to look forward to. Well... maybe try lowering your goal a little (mentally) and aim for that so your comfort zone isn't compromised so much, especially if you aim at something you can't achieve. Eventually you'll be comfortable maintaining... I'd assume at least.
