Hi guys.I'm brand new on here and i need help.I was approved for gastric bypass,and am scheduled for the 9th of this month.But now i am totally freaking out...Now i am wondering if i am doing the right thing.I think i did'nt reseach it enough.I am so scared.I had a lap-band done 2 yrs ago did okay ..lost 60 lbs.but gained back 30.Now that i qualify for the revision,i am terrified.I know it sounds dumb,but i am having alot of second thoughts.I have heard some things... about you become like a walking medicine cabinet because of all the vitaminns...That your hair falls out and your teeth go bad..so am i gonna be a skinny bald toothless woman? I am 53 yrs.old 5 ft 4" and 240 lbs..and i hate the way i look..I know it's a comitement and i thought i was ready to give up my sweets but now i don't know if i do it am i going to reget it ..Plus my mother passed away 3 weeks ago and the day after she passed i was approved ..now i'm like whoa.I have all this going on.should i cancel my surgery or do it???..please help....

There is a section on here devoted to weight loss surgery and your post would be best addressed there. I'm new too but I am 11 years out from a gastric bypass that was a revision from a stomach stapling in 1997. I had a mechanical failure where I lost my silastic ring at the bottom of the pouch. Our experiences our somewhat similar and I am sure there are others on here who can relate as well.
I am so sorry for the loss of your mother. I do think it is fairly normal to panic either right before or right after surgery (or both). I personally suggest perhaps postponing the revision until you have processed this horrible loss and in the meantime, join us in the weightloss surgery section and voice your gastric bypass concerns there and then proceed when you feel ready.

I understand completely...I lost my mom about 6 months after surgery and then my younger brother about a year out, so I get loss and not being able to eat that emotion. It was hard but we find ways. In fact, having the surgery helped me to be able to deal with my loss rather then eat it which helped me to handle it differently and perhaps quicker than if I could eat the emotions.
With that said, you could postpone your surgery if you feel like your research was inefficient or.....plug your nose and jump! Either way you will find support here!! We all felt the emotional rollercoaster, it gets hairier as your surgery day grows closer. It normal.

I just got approved (I think my date is around Feb, I'll know for sure at the end of the month), and I know how you feel.
Heck I was even 2 days away from the lapband before I pulled out (Money fears with going to school and whatnot).
This site has so much info, even though I still get freaked out about those 'I knew somebody who knew a guy who had it...and his_______ fell out/fell off/died/exploded...etc.
Listen to your healthcare team, they know what's best for your health. Like Hulk Hogan said : Take your vitamins! I freaked out about the hair loss. It does happen..but keep on your vitamin goals.

I've met some people who've had this done. They say it's hard, but they would do it again in a heartbeat.
I haven't had WLS but I have lost my mother and know there is never anything like losing your mother no matter how old you are. The grieving process can take a long time. As far as WLS surgery goes, get all the information you can and don't go ahead until you feel completely comfortable with it.
Desi - no matter which surgery a person chooses, it's really important to understand that it STILL comes down to a lifestyle choice. Ask yourself if you can commit to taking your vitamins forever [it's not that bad - if you miss a few days, you'll still be ok, but ya gotta get back on the horse!]. your teeth go bad if you don't do what your doc says: get your protein in, take your vitamins, and don't throw up a lot.
But over and above all this, given the loss of your mother - and I know you're hurting over this - having a chat with the surgeon about your feelings and the grief would be a great idea. there's nothing wrong with postponing the surgery until you're emotionally ready.
You are the only one who can decide what is best for you. My girlfriend had gastric bypass and is so anemic she gets infusions once a month but if you talk to her she would do the surgery again in a heartbeat. My husband also had it an regrets it everyday of his lufe. No right or wrong answer,,,just your answer.
I just had surgery a little over 2 weeks ago and I know some of the feelings you are having. If you follow the guidelines that your clinic or surgeon gives you then no you shouldn't have any problems. Yes your hair may fall out a bit in about month 3, that is because of the changes in diet especially protein but it does grow back!!! It is a pain taking all the supplements but a lot of people have to take multiple medications every day, it is just something to get used to doing. It is normal to freak out over this I think, it is a life altering surgery, a huge change in your life but as long as you do what they tell you to do you'll be fine. There are a lot of restrictions, it isn't easy but I haven't found anything about losing weight that is easy!
