We had to put him(choc lab) on a diet last year and he lost weight in which the vet was very happy but he has one un-redeeming quality..... he likes to raid the trash cans.

one of my cats will do that too. If there are chicken bones, or like the styrofoam thing chicken comes in he'll attack the garbage bag to get to it.

My dogs thankfully don't open the main garbage can, but they do like to get into the bathroom garbage and tear up toilet paper rolls and things that are far more gross. Whenever we forget to leave the door closed, that is. And if you leave some kind of junk food bag or box (with chips or crackers left in them) somewhere at nose reach, those will be torn apart as well. Brats!

My dogs try but I have started keeping the trash can in a closet they can not get to.

My Jetta does this as well. She is very food driven, and can/will jump to the counter tops to get some
yummy stolen treats. She is a chubby 16lbs. I have a small (14 gal or so) can, and since I do not have
a closet, or cabinet to put it in... I put it on a small separated section of counter behind my kitchen door.
It is just wide enough to have 1 top/bottom cupboard, and my can fits perfectly.
