I enthusiastically second the recommendation for Brooks walking shoes, specifically the "Addiction Walker"!
Several years ago I developed severe arch pain due to plantar fasciitis (resulting from wearing poorly made, arch support-less shoes, and obesity), which led me to an orthopedic footwear store (Footsmart). There I was fitted with arch support inserts (which cost me $180 but have lasted me over five years so far) and the aforementioned Brooks walking shoes, which I now wear during every work out (which consists of 1 to 2 hours on a treadmill and/or with Wii Ea Sport Active once or twice a day), as well as during chores, etc. They feel terrific, sturdy (but, as Heather said, also lightweight), and really prevent and ameliorate overall foot as well as arch pain for me.
If you have plantar fasciitis, which morning heel pain can be a symptom of, as mentioned above, these shoes are terrific because they provide exemplary all around support, preventing pronation.
My size 9 or 9.5 feet measure across to a EE (or 2W) width, but because they are chubby I was fitted with 9EEEE in these shoes, which turned out to be extremely comfy. The Brooks Addiction Walkers in these wider widths are available online, for example, at Zappos. They run about $100 full price but feel amazing and last, seemingly, forever.
Good luck!
