Default Taking Vitamins???

Hello ladies!
How many of you take vitamins? To be honest I have never really taken vitamins in my life. I can briefly remember a Flintstones vitamin stint when I was a child but that was brief. When I got older my mother always said vitamins were pointless because you just peed them out. I have been watching a lot of "You are what you eat" on BBC America and the nutritionist is always talking about how people have nutrient deficiencies and the affect those deficiencies have on their personality. Now I'm starting to wonder if taking a daily vitamin would be good for me....what do you all do?

i think its tough to know that you are getting 100% of vitamins and minerals because so much produce is quite old before we even get to buy it.

i try my best to ensure i get a varied diet but i do take extra supplements, mainly for the probiotics in my brand.

I take Nature Made Multi For Her, and I also take a calcium supplement. I've noticed that on days I don't take my vitamin I have a lot less energy.

I take the one a day weight smart. I don't know if it actually helps weight loss or not (im thinking not) but it definitely can't hurt and it can help a lot if you aren't getting enough nutrients due to cutting back on certain foods.

I take 1 Centrum (multivitamin) tablet and 2 Os-Cal (calcium supplement) tablets everyday. I think it makes a big difference for me as far as energy goes, and I've noticed that it makes me less sore after working out.

I learned in my nutrition class that it is only recommended for you to take one multivitamin per day, but it can't be substituted for healthy foods. A lot of vitamins and minerals are in foods that aren't in vitamin supplements because they are so tiny, but also necessary. Also, if you get to much of a certain vitamin, it can do A LOT of damage. It is also a myth that taking more of a vitamin than the 100 % recommended daily value will give you more energy. People that think taking a ton of vitamins and think it is making them have more energy are probably just getting the placebo effect! But thats just what I learned in class, so its a little one sided I guess.

I also take the one a day weight smart.. And I agree, I don't think it really plays a role in helping lose weight, but hopefully it dose replace some of the things that are left out when cutting back certain foods... (Or, at least thats what the box says =X ) lol.

Like my dietist always says: when you eat a healthy and varied diet, and you don't have any special circumstances (pregnancy, certain diseases) it is not really needed to take any more vitamins. If you feel better for it please do, but it's better to take a preparation that does not contain more than 100 % of the daily needs. Overdosing on vitamins is bad too.

I took a B vitamin complex for some time because my mom was convinced that it helped you to overcome all kinds of cravings (smoking, bad food, etc). It didn't do anything for me, at least, not that I noticed. It's also supposed to boost your metabolism, at least, if you don't get enough B vitamins your metabolism becomes slower. Maybe it would be worth a try.

I take a lot because I have a thyroid problem. Lots of calcium (I seem to be deficit if I don't get enough, and I know this because I fractured my ankle when I was 15 and it was still extremely weak years later. I took more calcium and it went away) , one B vitamin (for my anxiety), 1 selenium, 1 beta-carotene, 2 500mg vitamin C, 1 Chromium if I ever remember, and (not a vitamin) sometimes I take 5-htp for anxiety.

I take the walmart brand 1 a day women's vitamin. When i was using a trainer she recommended that I take a one a day and I have ever since even though I don't have a trainer now. It just ensures that I get my daily intake of vitamins.

I take a One a Day for women. I take it because I am a vegetarian, and it is recommended for vegetarians in order to get more B vitamins. I think it definitely helps as far as not getting sick. I take it every day after breakfast (you should take it with food), and I have not gotten sick in two years. I skipped taking them for 5 days, and now I have a little bit of a cold!

I also take Women's One a Day and a Calcium supplement. The Calcium is more because I'm not a fan of milk, than anything else.

I take a multispectrum multivitamin and mineral suplement once a day. I also take iron, but that's because I'm a vegetarian and worry about anemia.
