When my dad was growing up, his parents put a bathtub out by the horse stables so when the boys got super dirty they just bathed outside, then they'd scrub out the tub and fill it up with water for the horses. I remember visiting in first grade (last time I saw them/ visited) and I was so confused as to why their flower pot looked SO much like a bath tub - but yep! Sure enough, it had been converted!

Hmm...we currently have two bathrooms. One for "everyone" and one in the master bedroom which really isn't used very often.

Growing up we either had one bathroom or one and a half (the half being downstairs). I grew up in Europe and for the years we were in Spain, there was a water shortage because of the droughts and for most of the year water was turned on at around 7 am and turned off by 6 or 7 pm. If you missed it then you shoved your head in the sink and used some bottled water. lol So I don't really need the privacy. I can do without the "retreat" of a real shower.

I remember the grandparents were always VERY strict on bathroom/shower time when we visited. I remember being 14 and my grandmother stood in the bathroom to make sure it went as follows: hair rinsed, water turned off, shampoo up, rinse, turn off, condition up, rinse, scrub yourself quickly, out. SO glad I didn't grow up with that as my mother did. lol

I lived in a house in San Francisco that had a "water closet"--that is, the toilet was in a small room separate from the sink and bath. This was convenient if someone was taking an extended shower or bath--but you did have to wash your hands elsewhere.

7 people with one bathroom. We had scheduled morning times so that everyone could get in & out and get done with what they needed.

I'm happy to think of a bathroom as a place to get away from it all, but out of habit mostly am "in & out". Occasionally I will take what I consider a relaxing shower. But even then I don't end up staying in the bathroom for much longer than the duration of the actual shower.

Dream sequence: In the future when I have my own luxurious bathroom, I may spend a lot more time taking baths and rainwater showers. In the meantime, I'm happy to get clean and get out to do my relaxing elsewhere.

My mother grew up on a farm in Pennsylvania. They had an outhouse. During the winter they used chamberpots to avoid having to go out in the cold.

I'm totally spoiled I guess. I've only ever had to share a bathroom with maybe one other person and at times have had my own. I prefer my own!
I shower daily and sometimes a rinse depending on what I do. If I workout I sweat like a 500lb hairy man and there's no way I'm not washing off! My hair if not working out can go about a day and a half but that's pushing it.

Back in '94 I lived in southern Alaska in a cabin with no electricity, no running water, and therefore ... no bathroom. It was an adventure and I loved it. Never phased me a bit. I washed my hair using water from the creek while sitting on the "deck" in front of the cabin. Once a week I'd cycle into the nearest town and use the pay showers at the Harbormaster's. $0.75 for 4 mins of the hottest water you could ever wish for. It really made me appreciate plumbing!

Now, I'm horribly spoiled. I have a 2 bedroom townhouse with 3 bathrooms (well, 2.5 - one for each bedroom and a powder room downstairs). My big dream is to redo the bathroom in my master bedroom - expand it into the closet (move the closet to the other side of the room) and add a separate shower and a garden tub. I looooove my hot bubble baths when I'm feeling stressed.

Growing up we had 2 full baths (one up stairs & one down)for 2 adults 4 kids. In our 3 bedroom apartment now. We have 1 full and 1 half bath. Since I hate cleaning bathrooms I encouraged my DH to use the half bath as his closet for sports gear since we are short on space. So we share 1 full bath with 2 adults 3 kids plus I run a home day care and have 3 more kids during the day tme hours. Bathroom gets cleaned LOTS but it is only one. Beats cleaning two LOTS!
