We all know the size limitations of those dorm-room mini-fridges. We also know that it's tricky to make healthy foods with only a microwave and a coffee pot. So, when the caf isn't an option (or has been overused) what are some good suggestions to stay healthy?
i usually steam stuff (veggie, meat, etc...), and cut them into small slices, and after that deep in soy sauce. But idk if you can eat them...
Anyways, i think you might want to buy some small pots and stuff to cook by yourself in your room? I've never been in a dorm before so i don't really know much. But the apartment I used to rent when i was in college has everything for me to cook.
But uhm... dorm and apartment are different >.<" So i'm not sure.
there are some great foods out there designed for microwaves, if u look at the intake of nutrients, if its bad, just half what they sggest as a portion and stuff with lods of veg and salad which is easy to cook/boil and prepare. I always fill up on beg, and the other stuff if just to get variation. i think portion size is the main thing to control.
Microwaves are a great investment. With those, I usually eat the um...Healthy Choice steamed meals. You can still have your fruits and veggies (just buy only 2-3 at a time for the fridge) and some low-carb cereal and milk is always delicious
Another thing you might want to check out with your hall director is to see if your dorm has a kitchen somewhere. I know it our dorms, right by the lobby area there's a small area for students to cook.
I'm really hoping there's a hall kitchen SOMEWHERE. And I'd totally forgotten about the microwavable veggie steamers. This is great! Thanks a lot, guys!
yea rice cookers are AWESOME and crock pots. Do you like zuchinni? I cut up a half of one ,put 1/2 tsp olive oil and some garlic salt,a little cumin powder ,and a pinch of salt then i microwave for about 2:30 secs and it is so yummy! GL!
I challenged myself one month to use only the microwave for cooking. I used the cookbook that came with the microwave and didn't cook convenience foods - I cooked with fresh meats, veggies, etc. If you have access to a microwave, you can cook almost anything. I have recipes for seafood, beef and chicken. There are specialty cooking containers - I saw an advertisement today for a container designed for cooking pasta in the microwave. There is brown rice packaged to cook in the microwave in 10 minutes. I think if you have an idea of what you would like to eat, you should be able to find a way to cook it in the microwave. I cook almost all vegetables in the microwave. The exceptions are veggies I roast or grill. There are a few things you can't cook in the microwave such as hard boiled eggs. Overall your options are good.
