One thing that got my attention about this book is how eating the right foods tells your brain you are satisfied, and eating the wrong foods doesn't tell your brain anything. High fructose corn syrup is one of the bad ones. It does not turn off a hunger signal, regardless of how many calories we eat of it. AND it says that when a typical overweight person eats sugar, 35% of it can be stored as fat to use as energy later.
I will put a support thread in general diets. I think some people might not make the Oprah inspired association with this book. It's getting so much marketing by the Discovery Channel...
I too watched Oprah and the special on Discovery Health. I immediately went out and bought the book. My husband watched the show on Discovery Health and now we are going to do it together. Of course, he only needs to loose about five inches and I need to loose 18! I have been reading the book over the past few days and I really enjoy it. They give you a lot of information, but they also have made the book fun to read. I have already cheated, but I am going to go right back to it tonight. I am an emotional eater and with my husband in the running for a wonderful job I have had a few slips. Also having all of my son's Halloween candy around isn't helping. I like that this is not a diet, but a lifestyle change. Lord knows that I need to stay away from McDonald's and Taco Bell, so this can only be a good thing.
Ok, i have read up on the 'diet' and finished my first full day. I learned so many things that were bad for me... things i thought were ok to eat! My Special K Protein Plus, my Sugar Free Hard Candy, and my cool whip are all big no no's. This is going to be harder than i thought!
I was reading the Oprah message boards and ofcourse people were going crazzzy. One person said that Dr. Oz doesnt even eat the whole wheat grains except for on special occasions- is this true?
Day 1 went well (if i can eat that whole wheat goodness!)
B- 20 grapes
L- whole wheat pasta with low sugar marinara and a quorn cutlet
S- slice of cheese with 4 triscuits (is cheese ok? no bad ingredients...)
D- veggie burger with no bun- just lettuce, tomato, and a little bit of shredded cheese. Also had a cup of steamed broccoli (no butter)
S- half a cup of canned pumpkin with splenda
when i look back at the day i cant remember once being hungry which is amazing for my crazy appetite!! This is exciting- Right now my waist is exactly 33 inches- what do you think my goal should be? I was thinking 28 but i'm not quite sure!!
I think you need to re-read the book. 20 grapes is not a good breakfast. In the morning you need a high-fiber cereal, like oatmeal or kashi with fruit. The 20 grapes will not fill you up in the morning. Remember, breakfast is THE most important meal of the day!!
Yes it is mentioned. My understanding is that the doctor's think that 1) too much variety and choices in our foods have lead Americans to eat too much, more for pleasure than nutrtion and 2) automating our eating will steer us from thinking and over thinking about food. By taking all the guess work out we eat to live not live to eat. They emphaised this automatic eating, it keeps chemical levels stable in the body and keeps our minds off food.
I love Dr. Oz and Dr. Royzen. My kids gave me You the Owners Manual when it first came out about taking care of yourself. When I saw You on a Diet, I immediately bought it. I just love their common sense approach. It's a thoughtful way to eat and I'm following it pretty closely. My pantry and refrigerator were practically bare when I started but now I am filling them with all healthy things.
I just bought the book this morning...may I join you. I've been doing a combination of SBD and WW Core so the foods are pretty much what I've been eating. I really want the whys explained so that's why I got the book.
Hi Susan!! There is also a thread going over in General Diets that is a support thread. I think that one has more action than this thread. Have you read the book yet?
