Why Saturated Fatty Acids Threaten Our Health

If you are trying to get healthier, one thing you will want to avoid is saturated fatty acids.

Where Can Saturated Fatty Acids Be Found?

Saturated fatty acids are fats that are found mostly in animal fats and dairy products. Yet, there are two vegetable fats that are considered saturated: palm oil and coconut oil. Most of these fats are also considered invisible fats. They are found in processed and prepared foods such as: 

  • sausages
  • bacon
  • salami
  • cakes
  • cookies
  • pastries
  • chocolate
  • cheese

These fats are solid in form at room temperature.

Why Are Saturated Fatty Acids Bad For Us?

To put it simply, saturated fatty acids are bad for us because they can cause high cholesterol.  It can raise cholesterol levels by raising the concentrate amount of our low-density lipoproteins (the unhealthy cholesterol) and reduce the high-density lipoproteins (the good cholesterol).  A high amount of cholesterol in the body can lead to heart disease, heart attacks, and stroke. Saturated fatty acids can also raise the triglycerides, which can attribute to heart disease, Alzheimer’s disease, and cancer.

Relationships of Lipids and Triglycerides to Saturated Fatty Acids

Lipids are a large group of naturally organic compounds that relate by their solubility in mostly water. Most lipids are comprised of some sort of fatty acid. Lipid deposits can include triglycerides. They appear in the body as fat deposits. These are the same fats deposits many of us do not like.

How do we get rid of these triglyceride deposits (fat deposits)? We get rid of them by lowering the amount of saturated fat in our diet and increasing our exercise intake, thereby causing the body to release more energy.

What Types of Foods Should We Be Eating Instead of Saturated Fatty Acids?

We all should be eating healthy foods, which include adding more fruits and vegetables to our diets. We also need to limit the amount of saturated foods we eat. We can replace them with unsaturated foods such as:

  • Avocados
  • Nuts such as walnuts, peanuts, hazelnuts, pecans, etc.
  • Olive spreads
  • Oily fish
  • Nuts and seeds

Another way to help ensure that your food is healthy is by paying attention to how you prepare it. Consider baking, grilling, and boiling your meats, and limit the amount of frying you do.

You may also want to incorporate a nutritional supplement, such as fish oil, into your diet. This will ensure you are getting the right amount of necessary unsaturated fat that your body needs for energy.
