We all know that breakfast is the most important meal of the day. However, it’s also one of the easiest meals to skip, especially if you over sleep or are running late in the morning. Your best option is to grab something to eat on the run, but sometimes even that’s not an option (it’s amazing how easy it becomes to forget to do something simple when you’re running short on time!) Here’s what you should do if you skip breakfast.
Whether you skipped breakfast deliberately or accidentally, as in the case of a rushed morning, it’s in your best interest to grab something to eat as soon as you can. You can swing through Starbucks on the way to work for a bagel and some fruit or hit up a vending machine for some trail mix. It isn’t preferable, but you’re still better off eating one of the donuts in the office kitchen than eating nothing at all. It’s hard to begin a productive morning–and day–without any food in your system. You’ll be extremely hungry by lunch time if you don’t eat anything in the morning.
It’s always a good idea to keep a stash of healthy convenience foods at your desk, in your car’s glove compartment or in your purse for situations where you skip breakfast. If you don’t already have a stash, start one–or make friends with the person in the office who does! A box of Kashi granola bars, a can of almonds or some peanut butter crackers make excellent alternative breakfasts and can easily be stored for a long time. If you have access to a refrigerator at work, store some yogurt, fruit or low fat milk in a labeled bag so that you can make a simple breakfast when you get settled. You won’t be caught off guard without anything to eat if you plan ahead.
Skip the Coffee
If you’re a coffee drinker, cut down on your consumption if you’ve skipped breakfast. Don’t let your lack of energy due to skipping breakfast be confused with exhaustion from lack of caffeine. It’s easy to consume cup after cup of coffee when you have an empty stomach. By the time lunch rolls around you’ll be a ball of jitters. Instead, drink some water and find something to eat as soon as possible.
Eat an Early Lunch
If for whatever reason you cannot grab a quick snack or breakfast later in the morning, be certain to eat an early lunch. The longer you go without eating, the worse off you’ll be. Eat lunch earlier than usual. It may throw off the rest of you eating schedule for the day, but you can straighten it out the next.
Try not to get into the habit of skipping breakfast. The importance of eating breakfast for weight loss and management has been scientifically proven. Not only that, you’ll be more productive at work and will feel better overall.
