What Is Soy Milk?

Soy milk is a beverage that is made from soybeans. It has a texture that is somewhat similar to cow’s milk. The beverage is made when soybeans are soaked and then ground with water. The liquid that is strained is then boiled. When it cools it is ready to drink.

Soy milk has some nutritional advantages over cow’s milk. Soy milk has only a small amount of saturated fat and no cholesterol. This can help reduce the likelihood of cardiovascular disease. Unfortunately, there is one major disadvantage to soy milk. Unlike cow’s milk, it is not a good source of calcium. Calcium is a vital nutrient to bone strength and growth. Therefore, if choosing soy milk, be sure to choose a brand that is fortified with calcium.

Digestive Problems

Many people choose soy milk if they are unable to digest cow’s milk. Cow’s milk contains a sugar called lactose. People who are lactose intolerant cannot properly digest lactose, which causes nausea, vomiting and discomfort. Cow’s milk also contains a protein called casein. Casein can cause allergic reactions and malfunctions to the immune system in certain individuals. For those with digestive problems, soy milk is a common substitute for cow’s milk.
